FX’s Shogun (2024) First Trailer
Hey guys! Man, I wish I could make a video of the trailer Shogun new, but just one blog entry is enough. But before I start blabbing, here’s the trailer.

On one hand, I could see some familiar scenes from the original novel and original mini-series (which I reviewed here if you want to read). However, I can see that the FX team is making some changes. I’m pretty sure it’s in the novel (it’s definitely in the OG mini-series), but the Portuguese describe the Japanese as having six faces and three hearts. In this trailer, it seems like Toranaga is talking about having three hearts. And that’s something I don’t remember from the novel.
Furthermore, there is also the matter of death. In the source material, the Japanese describe death and life as equals. During the trailer, I couldn’t help but think of Blackadder’s quote: “Death stalks our land like a
Another thing I noticed was the scene of the female samurai fighting. I still need to finish the final part of the novel, but I think this is another twist on the story. There are no female assassins that I know of. No woman fights against a group of male samurai (and certainly defeats them). Well, at least they had a scene of the female samurai using a proper weapon in the trailer. But to me, it’s a red flag to insert female bosses if they’re not in the source material.
Cosmo Jarvis as Blackthorn looks plump. The Dutch ship he piloted was the fleet’s only survivor. And they don’t have many supplies. Also, the Cosmo looks too modern. I don’t look at him and think, “That’s someone from the 1600s.” That’s my complaint about Richard Chamberlain playing the role in the 1980 film adaptation.
Teaser Trailer
FX just released another trailer, this time a teaser.

A few more scenes from this movie, including Blackthorn standing up to Omi-san (if they’re following the novel). I really like the gritty Japanese feel of this 2024 version of Shogun. And the lighting for interior shots is much better now. While the sets of the 1980 series were great, most of the time the lighting suggested they were in a studio.
Outside of the female boss stuff, the rest of the show seems fine. I’m cautiously optimistic. Not sure if I’ll be able to watch this movie in time. Depends on finances (if the old house has already been sold).
