Since May 2017, Nisshin Foods has been producing a commercial series of products for its popular Donbei instant noodle brand. In the series, a character called “the young man” (Gen Hoshino) interacts with a cute fox girl, Dongitsune (Riho Yoshioka), while he is eating a bowl of Donbei kitsune udon. In recent years, the series has transitioned to a commercial animated series, with the recent taking place during the New Year holiday. In a strange twist of fate, Square Enix has teamed up with Nisshin Foods for the latest series of Donbei commercials. The trailer features characters from the Final Fantasy VII (FFVII) Remake series. The young man is portrayed by FFVII protagonist Cloud Strife, but who will play the adorable Dongitsune? The answer is much more shocking and humorous than you might expect:

Donbei announced on Twitter on February 25 the collaboration between FFVII and Nisshin Foods. The tweet teases who will be the Dongitsune in the FFVII collaboration ad: “Tifa, Aerith…who should be the Dongitsune?” FFVII fans don’t have to wait long to find out who will be the Dongitsune as it was revealed in a follow-up tweet on February 28: “After thinking it over, here’s what happened…”

After thinking carefully, this is what happened…

So who is the lucky FF7 girl to become Dongitsune? According to Nisshin Foods’ website, during commercial planning, employees fought over Tifa and Aerith, with some arguing in favor of Yuffie. Those were some strong opponents, but it wasn’t until one employee stopped the argument and said, “Why not Sephiroth?” And it was as if hearing Sephiroth himself say: “Accept it, I’m the one who will guide you.” leading you,” the game’s villain, one-winged angel, and everyone’s favorite tortured-soul pretty boy, Sephiroth was cast as the Dongitsune for the commercial.

The commercial is available on Nisshin Foods Group’s YouTube channel and the characters are saying::
Sephiroth (S): Cloud, I have something to ask of you. Will you eat Donbei?
Cloud (C): …I’m not interested.
S: Cloud, eat Donbei.
C: Take a rest!
S: Whenever you meet Dongitsune, remember, the person guiding you is Dongitsune. Dongitsune is always by your side. Donbei… Donbei… Donbei…
C: (grunts in pain) (slurps noodles) (recovers 7,777 hit points)
S: Good boy.
S: Can I give you Donbei?
The ad uses many scenes from Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, most notably the scene where Cloud meets Sephiroth after the first Mako factory is destroyed. The most interesting is definitely the deep fried abura tofu that replaces FFVII’s iconic meteor. The entertainment factor increases a lot if you are familiar with the history of the Donbei commercial series,… Fortunately, there is an unofficial compilation of the first 21 commercials in the Donbie series on YouTube for those who people want to get acquainted with it.

Those outside of Japan may not understand the deep humor in the FFVII Donbei commercial due to it being part of a longer series. However, seeing Sephiroth venture into Cloud through an instant noodle brand is even more entertaining and has the potential to fulfill the dreams of many Cloud and Sephiroth shippers. Hopefully Sephiroth will always have fox ears and a tail in the future because this ad is clearly a classic… at least until Tetsuya Nomura says otherwise.
