The original Ranma 1/2 manga series by Rumiko Takahashi debuted in Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday on August 19, 1987 and ended on March 6, 1996. A total of 38 tankobon volumes were released during its serialization.
The original manga inspired an 18-episode anime series that began airing in 1989. It was followed by Ranma 1/2: Nettou-hen, which ran from 1989 to 1992 for 143 episodes. Viz Media released the manga in English in North America.
The previous anime was produced by Studio Deen and had Atsuko Nakajima (Komi Can't Communication, Haven't You Heard? I'm Sakamoto, Trinity Blood) as character designer. Tsutomu Shibayama (co-director Chibi Maruko-chan) directed the first series while Koji Sawai (.hack//Legend of the Twilight) and Junji Nishimura (Vlad Love, Extreme Hearts) co-directed Nettou-hen.

The new Ranma 1/2 anime is the second remake of Takahashi's manga, following the recent four-volume Urusei Yatsura anime.
VIZ Media describes the series as follows:
Being a teenage martial artist isn't easy, especially for Ranma Saotome. During a training mission, Ranma accidentally jumped into a legendary cursed spring in China. Now, every time he's splashed with cold water, he turns into a girl! That's enough to complicate anyone's life, even without an arranged fiancée who doesn't like him (or says she doesn't) and a constant stream of rivals and suitors for both his male and female forms. What's a half-boy, half-girl to do?
