Our boy is ready! Kyotaro is finally ready to admit that Anna likes him and can therefore hope that the reality he so deeply dreams of could happen any day now. The Valentine’s Day episodes are a bit boring. I wonder why we got an actual Valentine’s Day episode when the series already had so much context with last week’s set-up. Plus, Anna gave Kyotaro chocolate at the end of that episode, so things start off slow here with the constant reiteration of the significance of chocolate during the holidays.
There is a significant difference between obligatory chocolate for friends and chocolate for friends. romantic meaning. It’s clear that Kyotaro wants chocolate, but he doesn’t want to get his hopes up because he can’t help but worry about uncertain situations. He can’t accept chocolate from Anna and can’t think of a million different reasons why it wouldn’t have any romantic connotations unless something happened. Thankfully, most of this episode is shown from Anna’s perspective because she knows that she needs to be a part of this relationship. That’s where the episode shines. Seeing Anna struggle with Kyotaro’s usual anxiety attacks shows how similar they are. Both are scared teenagers and don’t want to make any big moves unless they can guarantee results.
My favorite scene is when Kyotaro makes it clear that the only way he won’t get the wrong idea about a chocolate gift is if they explicitly say it’s romantic. Anna couldn’t have been that straightforward, but there was no way Kyotaro could have misinterpreted her words when she said she was fine with him misinterpreting his intentions by accepting chocolate from her. She is telling him that he is allowed to hold out hope and that he is allowed to hold on to the possibility that his feelings are mutual. This means that the desired outcome that Kyotaro is becoming more and more comfortable expressing to everyone may soon become a reality. I’ll be shocked if they don’t become a couple by the end of this season.
