Show off your dolls because it’s hinamatsuri in Japan!
March 3 is a time of celebration in Japan. This day, often called Hinamatsuri (Doll Day or Girls’ Day), is a day for families to set out a set of dolls representing the Emperor, Empress, attendants and musicians and enjoy them while eating snacks.
However, this holiday also has a second name: Momo no Sekku or Peach Festival. Why dig? After all, peach trees bloom in April, not March. The simple answer is, when Japan used the lunar calendar, March 3 landed right after the peach trees began to bloom. Although the name is outdated, late February to early March is also the time when plum trees bloom in more modern times, so there are still some beautiful flowers for you to enjoy during the holidays.
