Please note that this is just a compliment and not a review. Thanks for reading anyway! Let's get started.
If there's anything I can confidently say about Chainsaw Man Part 2, it's how much Denji suffered in this installment.
The man was in constant pain. Not that his pain from witnessing Power's death or eating Makima had ever completely subsided.
And despite that, Fujimoto continues to inflict more suffering on our boy. The same story repeats itself in Chainsaw Man chapter 171.
After losing his dogs, being provoked by Barem and the hybrid weapons – Denji lost it and transformed into Chainsaw Man…only to find himself being dismembered by the Public Security Officers.
However, his biggest shock came when he decided to go for a humble sushi meal after his huge ordeal – only to find Nayuta's head on the conveyor belt.
The question of whether Nayuta is really dead or not is for another time.
Why?
Because as far as Denji knew, he had lost the only family he had left and what little sanity he should have had. Investigating the authenticity of the crime scene on display was the least of his concerns.
Eat healthy, stay healthy
Thanks to the horror that appeared before his eyes, he could no longer keep his promise to Pochita. The normal life he dreamed of was no longer possible. And so, we readers saw a familiar transformation in Chainsaw Man chapter 171.
Intestines poured out of Denji's stomach and wrapped around his neck – and instantly the Chainsaw Demon stood on the Barem Bridge decapitated.
Well, watching Denji lose hope was definitely hard. However, this chapter also gave me one of the most satisfying moments.
Barem Bridge has become a total tool, thanks to how much he broke Denji. He really took a page out of Makima's book. On top of that, he has the audacity to say that he is “too cruel” to save the world. He forgot that he is not the main character in some dark seinen manga!
So when Denji grabbed the ponytail guy by the throat and popped his head off – I felt a strange sense of satisfaction surge through my body. I was happy, even. It almost felt like Denji had just crushed a can of soda!
Life Satisfaction Chainsaw
Now, questions have been raised about Fami's involvement in the whole fiasco involving Denji and Nayuta. There are rumors in the fandom that Barem is just a figurehead. And CSM 171 only adds fuel to these theories.
While we see the shocked looks on the faces of almost everyone who accompanied Denji to the Sushi place—including Asa—Fami's face is conveniently missing.
With the way she continues to eat nonchalantly despite seeing her sister's head on the conveyor belt in the previous chapter, we really have to start doubting her intentions. And if this plan is really her brainchild, and if Denji even knows about it, then Fami will carry it out.
Whatever her ultimate goal is – I don't think Chainsaw Man will forgive her for her actions.
It remains to be seen what Denji will do next, though. This will be an unbiased slicer show until Pochita gets in the driver's seat.
Let's go back to Asa/Yoru for a moment. Judging by their reactions, they didn't expect to see Nayuta's head on the conveyor belt, nor did they think the Chainsaw Demon would appear at this time.
Certainly, the War Demon regards the Chainsaw Man as his enemy. However, as things stand, Yoru is no match for the 'Hero of Hell'. Allow me to modify the quote from Turkey (Jason Statham) from Snatch to fit this situation-“Yoru the demon is praying. And if she doesn't, she will be!”
Oh?
Moving on, I especially want to commend Fujimoto for taking the time and effort to design characters that probably wouldn't last even a single chapter.
The 5th Special Division, which was already on standby, quickly entered into battle with the Chainsaw Demon.
It was the division that Makima had formed, consisting of hybrid weapons, to take down the former Chainsaw Demon.
However, the new division seemed to consist of a smug leader and 5-6 monsters who were more likely to be beheaded by the Chainsaw Demon immediately. They didn't even realize that it had appeared behind them and, funnily enough, they were heading in the opposite direction.
Regardless of direction – at this point, I feel certain death awaits them!
