Censorship of multimedia content in China, especially anime-related content, is relatively strict. Media censorship in China has a strict rating system: films are suitable for all ages or rejected, with no rating in between. Approval criteria are often arbitrary, vague or secretive, making it difficult to determine in advance what will pass review, fueling an industry of self-censorship.
Popular Twitter user “d0nut (@d0nut2x)” shared a comparison of the second episode of the second season of Vinland Saga.
In one particular scene, we can see Olmar in a room with a young woman. The two talked for a while, but Olmar left when he learned that the girl's family wanted to take advantage of her. The girl in question appeared scantily clad, covered by a sheet. However, in the supposedly censored episode, the girl was completely removed, so the scene lost all meaning.
Of course, there is always the possibility that someone edited it to trend on social media, as previously verified with the alleged censorship of “Kimetsu no Yaiba” and “Higurashi no Naku Koro ni” , turned out to be wrong. Although accessing broadcast content in China is difficult, there are many segments on Bilibili, the Chinese video platform, that show “Vinland Saga” unchanged.
Whether this censorship really happened or was just a modification to the other user's interaction sentence, this post still received a lot of attention from netizens.
