Open world games still have a strange appeal.
Starting with Genshin Impact, then Elden Ring, Baldur's Gate 3, Hogwarts Legacy and countless other blockbusters of the same genre exploded the world gaming scene. However, before that, there were many famous open-world masterpieces, the most prominent of which is Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption series.
First released in 2010, Red Dead Redemption is the spiritual successor to 2004's Red Dead Revolver.
Set in 1911, in the American West, Red Dead Redemption tells the story of former Van der Linde gang member John Marston. Using John's family as a threat, the Bureau of Investigation forces him to pursue three other former gang members, including his mentor and former best friend Dutch van der Linde. And that is also the premise for the next part of the story, Red Dead Redemption 2, released in 2018 and to this day is still considered the most visually appealing open world game with the most compelling storyline in history on PC.
And some good news for gamers as the Red Dead Redemption PC port seems to be closer than ever.
Specifically, Rockstar accidentally included some metadata for Red Dead Redemption on PC in the Rockstar Games Launcher update on September 17. The source also revealed that the Red Dead Redemption app data was added to Steam's internal database earlier in the day and kept private. The Rockstar Games Launcher update coincided with Grand Theft Auto Online bringing its BattlEye anti-cheat software to PC.
Other gamers have also shared corroborating evidence of folders named after Red Dead Redemption and the current-gen release of Grand Theft Auto 5, with screenshots as evidence of the changes made. Shortly after the Red Dead Redemption metadata folder was discovered by social media users, Rockstar Games quietly removed it from the launcher. While rumors surrounding a potential PC version of Red Dead Redemption have persisted since the game was ported to PS4 and Switch in 2023, the new metadata discovery could be one of the strongest arguments yet that a PC port is in the works.
