Anime began with Bakemonogatari in 2009, directed by Tatsuya Oishiwho also directed the 2016–2017 Kizumonogatari film trilogy. Other previous Monogatari anime were directed by Tomoyuki Itamura (Call of the Night, The Case Study of Vanitas).
Kodansha USA released the novel series in English, which describes the first part of Bakemonogatari as:
There was a girl at their school who was always sick. She was often late, left early, or didn't show up at all, and skipped gym class as a matter of course. She was beautiful, and the boys whispered that she was a convent princess. As the self-proclaimed worst loser in the class soon found out, they just didn't know what kind of monster she was.
Thus begins a story of mysterious illnesses of supernatural origin that reveal profound insights into the human psyche, a collection of case files that delivers a sense of surprise as well as irreverent humor.
