What exactly is love? We can think of all kinds of ways to describe it, evoke feelings of love, and express it to others. However, it is much more difficult to say exactly what love is. It’s not something that can be quantified or calculated in purely logical terms, but it is the challenge that Rentaro faces to win the heart of his newest confidant: the impossibly efficient Nano Eiai. mistake. Yes, her last name is pronounced exactly as you think.
Luckily, just because Nano is defined by efficiency and is the top student in her class, that doesn’t mean she’s smart – at least not in the way that matters to this show’s comedy. . Just like other girls take their gimmicks to the extreme, Nano takes pure logic to its illogical end. True to her namesake AI, she would rather copy textbook diagrams than make and record her own observations in science class. In a scene straight from Koe de Oshigoto! she will drool all over our protagonist’s fingers to “sterilize” his cuts faster than going to the infirmary. She even nonchalantly crushes the dreams of children everywhere by singling out a mascot character who wears a costume. Despite her stoic face, she’s also an eccentric weirdo like the rest of this group, and would definitely fit in perfectly with Rentaro’s eclectic way of chatting with his girlfriends. her own way.
Of course, it’s worth noting that getting Nano is driven by powerful logic to not only acknowledge his emotions but also value them as something without strict value or benefit. It’s a difficult problem that the show tackles with a surprisingly astute little experiment. One might expect Rentaro to take Nano on an incredibly life-changing date, or another might try to play Nano’s game by quantifying each moment with a score value. Instead, their trip to the amusement park is boring—except that this is somehow Rentaro’s first date, despite having three times the average number of girlfriends. It’s simple, easy going, and charming in a completely simple way. That’s exactly what drives his point home in the end. Despite how insignificant their time together may seem, through some romantic alchemy, it becomes precious to Nano. Love doesn’t have to be exploratory or special to be valuable. It can be as simple as holding hands with someone you care about, or lovingly looking back at cute photos; The meaning, the “value,” lies in that very moment, regardless of whether you can express it in words or not.
This is clearly a lighter part of the show. Nano herself has a cheerful personality but she will begin to shine when she blends in with the rest of the cast. Only with Rentaro, her attacks are a bit repetitive. She still lands some quality jokes along the way, but there are a few sillier ones than in previous episodes, and her lower energy doesn’t allow for the slapstick humor that carried her. series so far. While I appreciated the extreme sentimentality, the confession scene also lacked the emotional punch that made Shizuka’s episode so touching. It’s not bad, and in any other romance anime it would probably be a great little episode, but 100 Girlfriends has set a high standard for itself. Rentaro would never think of ranking any of his loves other than S-rank, but I feel comfortable recognizing a B-rank outing.
Luckily, next week will have plenty of space for recovery, as we embark on the most cliché of Harem Anime: the swimsuit episode. Considering what this show has done with just one finger, God help us when it finally goes full Horny.
In the spirit of efficiency, I have provided an alternative review image for all three of the remaining current girlfriends.
