ONE Introducing characters in the anime is one of the most important moments for that character because it determines how the audience perceives that character. While some introductions are subtle or effective, some of the best in anime history are also the funniest, instantly endearing the character to the audience.
Introducing a character can be done in any number of ways, all with the goal of giving the audience and surrounding characters a glimpse of what makes that character unique. They can play with other characters and the audience’s expectations of how the story will play out or how that character will behave in clearly clever ways. No matter how they’re done, the funniest anime character introductions are scenes that are as thrilling and funny out of context as they are in context.
10 Mikoto Mikoshiba – Nozaki-Kun of girls every month
From the beginning, Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun had many funny moments. One of the most memorable included the introduction of Mikoto Mikoshiba, known to Nozaki as Mikorin. Nozaki first describes Mikoshiba as “pure, sensitive, and delicate,” which gives Sakura a certain image of this friend of Nozaki’s. However, at first glance, Mikoshiba seems a bit rebellious and scary, the exact opposite of what Nozaki describes him as. This causes Sakura to criticize his lie. However, it is quickly revealed that Mikoshiba has a softer, more adorable side, frequently citing Nozaki as inspiration for the female protagonist of his manga.
Right after Sakura met him, some girls from school called out Mikoshiba, causing him to make an overly flirtatious comment that immediately made him blush and feel embarrassed. This glimpse of his true personality beneath Sakura’s initial impression of him makes Mikoshiba’s first appearance on the show a charming and humorous introduction.
9 Satoru Gojo – Jujutsu Kaisen
Despite the serious nature of Jujutsu Kaisen’s plot, there are still plenty of humorous interactions interspersed between the actors. A brief but notable moment is one of the first times Satoru Gojo actually enters the picture. Although the audience is introduced to him earlier through his conversation with Itadori about his upcoming execution, Gojo’s key moment of introduction comes right after Itadori bites Ryomen Sukuna’s finger. At the beginning of episode two, Fushiguro is preparing to lift the newly acquired curse despite his injured state when Gojo enters the picture.
Gojo is quick to tease Fushiguro despite the overall seriousness of the situation, taking photos of his injured student to share with the other students later, claiming that he initially would not have come, appearing on battlefield with souvenirs and kikufuku. However, it’s pretty obvious how formidable he is when he confronts Sukuna in Itadori’s body as if it’s no big deal. The combination of his relaxed reaction and the gravity of the situation both speaks to his abilities and gives the audience a witty introduction to his character.
8 Monkey D. Luffy – One Piece
Of course, the main character of One Piece is introduced right from the first episode; however, his situation does not seem ideal for a future Pirate King. Despite this, Luffy didn’t seem to be bothered. The audience first saw Luffy burst out of the crate in which he was napping, knocking out the lights of an Alvida pirate and startling his last friend, Koby. The conversation follows as Luffy remarks that the man he just took down shouldn’t sleep there or he’ll catch a cold, and the Alvida pirates respond with “You did it!” is a classic example of the humor that abounds in One Piece.
To satisfy his immediate needs, Luffy went in search of food, which he shamelessly took while recounting his current situation to Koby. Once again, Luffy doesn’t seem particularly deterred by the fact that 1) he doesn’t have a dinghy anymore, 2) he’s on another pirate crew’s ship, 3) he just knocked a sailor unconscious other group. The audience quickly realizes that Luffy tends to take things easy, but still seems determined to see what that means, especially when it comes to helping his friends and others as well as performing my dream.
7 Keroberos – Card Leader Sakura
The Guardian Beast appears quite early in Cardcaptor Sakura, volume one. When Sakura accidentally wakes Kero from his sleep, the adorable guardian greets her (and the audience) with his patented “Hidey-howdy-ho.” The casual nature of the greeting and emphasis on his outdated vocabulary quickly usurped the intensity of the moment and Sakura was forced to examine Kero as if he were a toy. However, she seems to throw punches pretty quickly, leading to a conversation between her and Kero about what happened to all the Clow Cards. Sakura explains that they all flew away when she read the word “Windy” on the first card, causing Kero to respond with a “Ya don’t say!” before they laugh to themselves for a moment and Kero has an understandably distraught reaction to the matter at hand. The quick cut to Sakura eating dinner that night only adds to the moment.
6 Pikachu – Pokemon
When Pikachu was offered by Professor Oak to be the starter Pokémon for the late Ash Ketchum, Ash was delighted at the opportunity. Despite Professor Oak’s warnings—a quick-witted “You’ll see” when Ash comments on how cute Pikachu is—Ash hugs the adorable Pikachu and finds himself shocked by his efforts. Professor Oak then added that Pikachu is sometimes known to have an “attractive personality”. Oak then proceeds to offer Ash some trade tools, which Ash accepts, causing both of them to be electrocuted by a grumpy Pikachu.
On top of that, the following scene features a brief and humorous exchange between Ash and his mother after Pikachu refuses to participate in his Poké Ball. She commented that they were “already friends,” and Ash simply replied “Um, sure.” Pikachu’s stubbornness shown from the beginning makes it all the more touching as he warms up to Ash and they develop an unbreakable bond.
5 Host Club + Haruhi – Ouran High School Host Club
Whether audiences are familiar with how the plot plays out in Ouran High School Host Club or not, there’s something clearly interesting about the emphasis on the Chekov’s Gun in this trailer. When the scene of Haruhi accidentally entering the Host Club begins, viewers get several shots showing similar scenes from different angles. During this time, there is a bright red arrow representing an expensive vase that actually symbolizes the beginning of Haruhi’s adventure. This comedic effect combined with the ignorant comments of some of the Host Club members about Haruhi’s social status, emphasized by Tamaki’s declaration of “Love the lives of the poor” sets the stage for what Haruhi will have to contend with for the rest of the series: irrefutable proof that the rich really do live in their own world
4 Shota Aizawa – Hero Academy
The ever-friendly teacher of class 1-A, Shota Aizawa’s introduction to My Hero Academia gives viewers a glimpse of the gruff but ultimately caring Pro hero. Not caring about his students’ reactions to him emerging from the cocoon-like structure of his sleeping bag, Aizawa quickly complained before introducing himself to the class as their teacher. The realistic way Aizawa works through this interaction and the student’s reaction to the unusual state in which he is introduced creates an odd yet entirely indicative picture of Aizawa as How to be both a character and a mentor. True to his matter-of-fact nature, which belies the genuine care he has for his students, he quickly puts Class 1-A to the test.
3 Hinata and Kageyama at Karasuno – Haikyu!!
Hinata and Kageyama’s interactions from both a comedic and emotional perspective, are one of the many gifts that continue to give in Haikyu!!, even though their relationship comes from some rather rocky beginnings. . Putting aside their fight in middle school, introducing both Hinata and Kageyama at Karasuno is sure to shake things up a bit. Hinata’s inner monologue at the end of episode 1—about training to get better at Karasuno to then get revenge on Kageyama—hits him right when he realizes that they are, in fact, attending the same school. gives an at once funny and ironic precedence to the story. audiences. What follows is a scene where Kageyama humorously gets hit by his own serve due to shock and a series of subsequent shenanigans that essentially end with both men being kicked out of the club until they can reconcile well.
2 Damao – All Saint Street
The simple nature with which All Saint’s Street infuses humor into the ordinary lives of its extraordinary cast is one of the many reasons why the series is so appealing from the start. With the appearance of the werewolf character Damao, there’s one thing that the series immediately makes viewers realize: this poor guy has terrible luck.
Over the span of a few minutes, the audience follows the story of Damao’s unwitting journey to the city in search of Neil Bowman and watches as every situation he considers leads him into an even more dangerous situation. even worse. Water got on his smartphone? It’s okay, it’s waterproof. A broken potted plant on his phone, broke it? It doesn’t matter that he has a physical map. Water melts the map? He brought an extra copy. Time and time again, Damao’s contingency plans fail due to his unusually terrible luck and he still finds his way to his goal in the end. Damao’s introduction to the series is simultaneously incredibly ridiculous, it defies belief and causes chuckles, but also makes him an instantly sympathetic character.
1 Kyo, Yuki and Shigure’s animal forms – Fruit basket
Tohru’s introduction to Kyo, Yuki, and Shigure’s animal forms is definitely a fun and iconic moment in the Fruits Basket series. Naturally, she is understandably caught off guard by what happens, running frantically around the house with her new animal friends, declaring to the mailman that “everyone is an animal.” Meanwhile, the three members of the Sohma family seem to carry on as if nothing has changed: Shigure nonchalantly receives letters from the postman like a dog, Kyo and Yuki start arguing again.
