Second letter Rebuild Evangelion the film ends with a teaser for the sequel, but that movie won’t come out for 5 years, leaving fans with a mysterious image of Asuka wearing an eyepatch that led to a lot of jokes. Although Asuka had an eyepatch in the third film, it was covered up, leaving many fans of the original film wondering exactly how she got it.
Among the many changes to Rebuild of Evangelion, one of which is the removal of Toji Suzuhara, a friend of Shinji’s from school, as a potential EVA pilot. However, the events involving Unit 03 and the Angel still occur – this time, however, Asuka is in the pilot’s seat of Unit 03. Unit 03 is contaminated with a green, chemically-colored slime. out is the Ninth Angel. The slime gets inside the inlet plug and begins to infect Asuka, triggering an emergency alert when Eva activates and begins to rampage. Unit 03 is now indistinguishable from an angel, and the former input plug is now recognized as an Angel core. Unit 01 eventually defeated Unit 03, tearing Eva to pieces, but Asuka (somehow) survived.
Asuka has an eye patch because unit 01 attacked her
When Asuka was next seen in Evangelion 3.0, she was wearing an eyepatch over her left eye, although it was unaddressed. The initial assumption one made was that it was an injury caused by the Unit 03 incident, which is at least partially true. However, later in the film, as Shinji and Kaworu are descending into Terminal Dogma in Unit 13, Asuka tries to stop them in her upgraded Unit 02. Failing to do so, Asuka makes her last attempt: she removes her blindfold and reveals a “seal pillar” has been implanted in the place of her eye, and that the Ninth Angel never acted. being purged from her body. Removing the seal, the Ninth Angel took hold and Asuka (and Unit 02) transformed. Unfortunately for Asuka, this reaction from her was part of the plan, and her Angel core (entrance) was absorbed into Unit 13.
From a meta perspective, there’s another reason why Asuka has that blindfold. In End of Evangelion, Asuka and Unit 02 are defeated by Mass Production Evas, armed with clones of Lance of Longinus. One of them threw the Spear at high speed, piercing Unit 02’s eye (and thus the synchronized Asuka). The eyepatch in Rebuild of Evangelion also serves as a nod to this iconic scene, and could even act to convince dedicated fans that they know what happened to this iconic scene. her eyes, only to be taken aback by the Ninth Angel’s revelation. It also helps to show that quite a long time has passed, even though Asuka and the other Eva pilots haven’t aged.
“Pirates of Asuka” was definitely the focus of some memes around the time of the blindfold reveal, but Neon Genesis Mission took what seemed a bit silly at first and made it literally horrifying, in the same way that the series did so well.
