There will be seven new worlds, including the Pipe-Rock Plateau, Fluff-Puff Peak, Shining Falls, and the Petal Islands. Players can move to levels on the world map and there will also be open areas where players can choose which level they want to join. Levels show the level of difficulty on the map.
The playable characters are Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Yellow Toad, Green Toad, Toad, Yoshi, Red Yoshi, Yellow Yoshi, Green Yoshi, and Nirvana. Everyone except Yoshis and Nii has the same control and movement. Yoshis and Nibs can’t take damage, but they can’t transform when power-ups either. In addition, Yoshis can jump and use his tongue to eat enemies and spit them out. In multiplayer mode, if someone plays as Yoshi, other characters can ride them.
New enemies include Hoppycats, Melon Piranha Plants, Condors, Konks, Mumsies and Maw-Maws. Familiar enemies like Goomba, Koopa Troopa, Boo and Lakitu also return.
The first new power is Elephant, which allows the player to use his hose to defeat enemies and spray water. Elephants can also pass blocks easily. The Bubbles power-up allows the player to release bubbles to trap enemies or use as an additional bouncing pad. The drill allows the player to dig underground and in the ceiling, while also helping the player to protect from falling enemies. Wonder Flower transforms the stage and sometimes the character in different ways known as Magic Effects.
The game will have local and online multiplayer functionality. Up to four players can play the game in local mode. In online mode, the live player’s ball will appear. If the player dies and becomes a ghost, they can return to the game without losing their life by touching another player or the player’s ball alive. The player can also say hello and place a Standee, which can also revive the ghost player. There is also a Friend Race mode.
The Direct also announced that the Switch will get a new OLED Mario Red Edition model on October 6.
The game will launch on October 20.
