うる星やつら episode 40 (2002)
Urusei Yatsura 40 Review (2022)
Summary/SPOILER Summary:
Nagisa currently lives with Ryuunosuke and Fujinami. He dreams of being Ryuunosuke's loving wife. In fact, he's quite lazy. Ryuunosuke is angry at the amount of food Nagisa consumes while freeloading. At school, she complains about it, making Lum and the others wonder why Ryuunosuke doesn't kiss Nagisa even though he looks like a girl. When Ataru tries to attack Ryuunosuke, Nagisa appears to stop it.
Fujinami departs to travel to the hot springs. He warns Ryuunosuke not to touch Nagisa. Ryuunosuke decides to leave, but when Nagisa accuses him of being afraid of her, she decides to fight. However, Nagisa easily defeats Ryuunosuke even though he looks like a girl. Sakura-sensei appears with an anti-ghost ofuda. This makes Nagisa panic. Ryuunosuke decides she must settle things in her fight with Nagisa.
To that end, Ryuunosuke attacks, but Nagisa easily avoids her attack. As Sakura-sensei, Ataru and Lum watched, they saw Nagisa's strategy. Ryuunosuke was exhausted so Nagisa hugged her and defeated her. This makes Ryuunosuke burst into tears of frustration. Nagisa objects, asking if Ryuunosuke would hit someone she had feelings for. To that end, Ryuunosuke relented and let Nagisa stay.
Later, Ataru's class decides to keep quiet after Onsen-sensei threatens them with additional classes. Because they didn't let Ten-chan understand what that meant, he terrorized their class. However, the whole class remained silent and took notes, encouraging Onsen-sensei to continue the lesson.
Thoughts/Comments:
Boy, another episode with Fujinami and Ten-chan. Uh. The first story of Urusei Yatsura 40 originates from chapters 349 and 350 of the manga. It was never adapted for the OG anime series. The second story is taken from manga chapter 120 (OG anime volume 56).
Nagisa's story continues
Since the first story of Urusei Yatsura 40 Having never been adapted into an anime before, it was interesting to see this part of the story. However, when Fujinami appeared on the screen, I almost screamed in frustration. Oh my god, I despise this character so much. Luckily, he's not around much as the story focuses on Nagisa and Ryuunosuke.
I feel sorry for Nagisa, perhaps more than Ryuunosuke. They were both mentally abused by their crazy father (because that's funny). Even though Nagisa is manipulative, I believe he has strong feelings for Ryuunosuke. It is about a child who is betrothed, thus growing up with the idea that the other person is his only true love.
I also felt sorry for Nagisa when Sakura-sensei attacked him with her against the ofuda ghost. I understand that Nagisa died, but her soul remained on Earth and gained a new physical body. To achieve that goal, Nagisa needs to eat and sleep. So I'm not sure how Sakura-sensei's magic will affect Nagisa. He is almost a normal human, with extraordinary powers, especially considering his appearance.
I liked how Ryuunosuke understood Nagisa a little better by the end of the story. Unfortunately, the gag at the end ruins everything because a stupid gag overshadows a meaningful moment in the story.
Final thoughts and conclusions
Let me finish giving my review Urusei Yatsura 40 with some final thoughts.
I hate Ten-chan and feel like his story doesn't warrant an entire arc. The only thing that could have given this episode an interesting outcome is if Ten-chan had to take a severe beating (including being electrocuted by Lum) at the end for all the crap he did do. Why is it lazy to have the honorific “-sama” attached to the name, but NOT lazy to omit it when you can't think of something appropriate? Nagisa calls Ryuunosuke “Ryuunosuke-sama” not only to express his deep feelings for her but also to elevate her. So the official registrant sometimes turned this into “Ryuunosuke, baby”. But other times, when it doesn't work, they ignore it because apparently, the Japanese are stupid to use honorifics as a literary device. And because we don't want to
In the end, the first story of the episode was fine, mainly because it was new to me. And I feel sorry for Nagisa. The second story is complete garbage because of Ten-chan.
