Marvel Studios welcomes Halloween this year with a mystical project, with elements such as witches, magic and even unexplained scientific phenomena. That is the Agatha All Along series, which is considered a spin-off of WandaVision – Marvel's first television work.
Not only does it bring the “chatty neighbor” Agnes/Agatha Harkness back to the screen, Agatha All Along also brings a mysterious character known only as Teen. Right from his appearance, this young man with a strong passion for magic has made the audience curious about his origin as well as his role in the series. There have been dozens of hypotheses put forward, a series of “conspiracy theories” have been built. However, there is only one correct answer, and it was explained by Marvel Studios in the latest episode: Teen is Billy, one of the two sons of Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch.
Strictly speaking, Marvel Studios does not directly address the Teen's true identity. However, based on many different details, such as Agatha's sarcastic comment: “It's true that like mother, like daughter”, the power to manipulate minds, or even the appearance with a crown on her head , this seemingly innocent young man could be none other than Billy Maximoff/Billy Kaplan/Wiccan.
In the original comic book, Billy Maximoff was created by Wanda from a piece of Mephisto's soul – the famous devil mentioned in episode 3 of Agatha All Along. When Mephisto regained his powers, Billy was forced to die, and was later reborn in the body of Billy Kaplan, while his brother, Tommy Maximoff, became Tommy Shepherd. Later, even though he regained all his memories related to the Maximoff family, Billy still retained the name Billy Kaplan and began his superhero journey.
Taking the nickname Wiccan, Billy became one of the first members of the Young Avengers team, along with Nathaniel Richards/Iron Lad, Eli Bradley/Patriot and Teddy Altman/Hulkling – and also Billy's boyfriend. This is also the superhero group that Marvel Studios has been actively building for many years, with members such as Kate Bishop, Cassie Lang or Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel.
Billy Maximoff's powers have been somewhat demonstrated in the WandaVision series. While his older brother, Tommy, inherited his uncle Peter Maximoff's super speed, Billy has many similarities with Wanda. He possesses the ability to manipulate reality, manipulate natural elements, teleport, telepathy, heal wounds along with the ability to fly. Billy can even observe parallel realities in the Marvel multiverse.
In the latest episode of Agatha All Along, Billy also partly demonstrated his scary superpowers after a fierce conflict with Agatha Harkness. No longer an innocent apprentice witch like when he first appeared, after revealing his identity, Billy immediately manipulated the minds of two other witches, Jen and Lilia, to drown Agatha in the swamp. After that, he himself took action against them, leaving a big question mark about the fate of the group of witches conquering “The Road” after episode 5 ended.
The biggest question now is why Billy was able to survive the event at Westview in WandaVision 3 years ago. In the TV version, Billy and Tommy are products created by Wanda and can only exist in the “magic dome” environment covering the town of Westview. However, after realizing her mistake, Wanda decided to revoke the dome, leading to the destruction of brothers Tommy and Billy.
This is also the cause of Wanda's transformation in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, when she took advantage of the Darkhold book to go to another reality, where her two children really existed. In the ending of WandaVision, Wanda also accidentally heard Tommy and Billy's calls for help, showing that the “souls” of the two boys seemed to still exist after the magical dome was destroyed.
However, it must be emphasized that Billy Maximoff of the Earth-616 universe (the main universe of the MCU), is inherently just a product of magic and has never been a fully human individual. Therefore, Billy's appearance in Agatha All Along, although it brought many surprises to fans, also left many big questions. Perhaps the answer will be officially brought by Marvel Studios in the remaining 4 episodes of the series. And by then, we will know what happened to the Maximoff family of four after the shocking event at Westview.
