Transformers characters like Optimus Prime are no strangers to strange, unexpected branding collaborations, with the Autobot leader once famous for pulling Pepsi bottles on his trailer. Now, he's getting a new musical medley, as shown by a strange new prototype that's left even fans confused.
Showcased at a recent toy fair, the new Transformers x Bump Of Chicken Bass Convoy is certainly a sight to behold, to say the least. Cast in a myriad of colors, the figure brings the heroic Autobot to life like never before. It's all part of a new collaboration with a rather popular Japanese band that anime fans may be familiar with.
Optimus Prime's latest paint job is a mix of colors.
Shown at the 2024 Tokyo Toy Show (which also debuted Takara's new Synergenex toy line), the Transformers x Bump Of Chicken Bass Convoy (the Japanese name for Optimus Prime) toy is cast in multiple colors. Instead of the usual red and blue color scheme, the Autobot leader is red, blue, light blue, orange, yellow, and green, with a rather asymmetrical collection of odd colors. The statue is a repaint of the Transformers: War for Cybertron – Earthrise Optimus Prime toy, which was used to represent the Generation 1-inspired design from the Transformers: War for Cybertron Netflix anime. Of course, he didn't wear those colors in that episode, with the actual rainbow part of the Bump of Chicken collaboration. To that end, he even has the Bump of Chicken logo on his shoulder.
Based in Sakura, Chiba, Japan, Bump of Chicken are a Japanese alternative rock band that have had a number of hits since forming 30 years ago in 1994. Many of their songs have been used in conjunction with various anime series or even referenced them. For example, the song “Arue” is a tribute to Rei Ayanami from Neon Genesis Evangelion, while “Souvenir” is the second intro to the popular manga series Spy x Family and “Sleep Walking Orchestra” is the intro theme to the 2024 fantasy anime Delicious in Dungeon. The band has also collaborated with Transformers before, including a manga featuring the band as robots in disguise and a blue repaint of Bumblebee featuring band member Yoshifumi Naoi/Chama in a transforming exo suit. There's no word on when the Transformers x Bump Of Chicken Bass Convoy will be available to fans or how much this truly eyesore will cost.
