The Flash is the 13th film, also one of the final projects to close the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). After the heavy defeat of Shazam! Fury of the Gods fans hope that the work will be successful at the box office, reviving the reputation of the superhero brand.
Before its release, the project was even more noticeable because of the noisy private life of actor Ezra Miller. According to IMDb, the work ranks 5th in the list of 10 most anticipated blockbusters this summer, surpassing Fast X, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts mixed Mission: Impossible 7 .
When the hero corrects mistakes
The main character in the film is lightning hero Barry Allen (Ezra Miller) – famously known as The Flash. He possesses the ability to move extremely fast, exceeding the speed of light. However, the character still has to face family tragedy, after his father is arrested on suspicion of murdering his mother.
Once, Barry realized that he could not only teleport to all dimensions, but also travel through time. So he decided to go back in time, back to the time when his mother was murdered to change everything.
Barry’s selfish actions caused a series of events to change, pushing the Earth to the brink of destruction. With no other choice, he must join forces with another version of himself in the past, while calling for help from Batman (Michael Keaton).
Unlike many superhero movies that focus on action, The Flash deepening the character’s psychology, uncovering many hidden corners of Barry Allen’s inner self. Viewers better understand his family situation, the relationship between him and his parents, as well as the mental wounds the hero has to endure.
Acting on screenplay, Christina Hodson – known for Bumblebee (2018) and Birds of Prey (2020) – want to create a lang class story. In addition to family affection, the film also carries a deep message about how to deal with past pain. Whether it’s a superhero or a mortal, everyone will grow and become stronger if they know how to stand up from failure.
The concepts of the multiverse, the timeline, and the space are all simply explained by the scriptwriter, making it easy for viewers to understand. She incorporated reasonable humor, just enough to maintain entertainment, but not lose the seriousness of the story. Towards the end, more twists appear, bringing surprises to viewers.
Technique is an unfortunate minus point
With expensive budgets, this year’s summer blockbusters are highly appreciated for their visuals and action, such as Fast X, Transformers 7… However, the DC blockbuster has many criticisms about the technical effects. Most of the opinion that the blockbuster is not worthy of a budget of approximately 220 million USD.
Previously, the project was delayed, delayed due to many times of changing the director. Initially selected filmmakers such as Seth Grahame-Smith, Rick Famuyiwa, John Francis Daley… all announced their resignation because of disagreement.
Finally, sitting in the director’s chair is Andy Muschietti – who has been successful with horror projects Mama (two thousand and thirteen), It (2017), It Chapter Two (2019). Although inexperienced with the superhero genre, the filmmaker still leads the story well, bringing a lot of emotions to viewers.
However, the technical effects are not of high quality, making the viewer feel that the post-production is done in a hurry. The computer effects don’t look real, especially when the protagonist uses superpowers, running through cities and countries. Even in many segments, the image quality and effects are lower than many TV series today.
Even the fight scene at the end of the movie has not really satisfied viewers. The lighting, colors and effects are handled poorly, more or less reducing the aesthetics, causing the quality of the film to go down.
According to Variety , director Andy Muschietti is quite candid about the film’s effects. He thinks it’s all “on purpose”, to give viewers an unusual perspective of the main character. However, most fans are not satisfied with this point.
Acting elevates the work
Although the technical effects are disappointing, the work is still attractive thanks to the round acting of the cast. In the film, Ezra Miller has to play 2 roles at the same time, corresponding to 2 versions of The Flash in the present and in the past.
On the one hand, he had to become a carefree, bubbly, and energetic Barry. On the other hand, he is Barry who has many confidants because he has experienced mistakes and losses. One person is comfortable expressing emotions while the other is always shy, keeping in moderation. Regardless of the role, Ezra Miller is successful and brings a lot of emotions to the film.
With a cinematic face, the star fully portrays the loneliness and inferiority of the character. It turns out that behind the superhero mantle is still a wounded child, longing for love.
The supporting actors are also charming, which makes the work more attractive. Michael Keaton proves “the older the ginger, the spicier it is”. At the age of 71, the actor still maintains his form, showing the style of an old, experienced Batman.
Actors Ben Affleck, Michael Shannon, though little land, did not have difficulty returning to familiar roles. In particular, the appearance of Sasha Calle as Supergirl is also an interesting element in the film.
Bypass restrictions, The Flash still won the hearts of fans. The work is considered a “love letter” to those who love the DCEU, bringing a lot of emotions to the audience.
