It took four years for Tower of God season 2 to hit screens. A studio change and other setbacks prevented one of the best anime of 2020 from getting a sequel in a short time.
Sadly, the anime didn't seem to be worth the wait as people thought, with audiences left disappointed by the things that were cut during production.
Someone commented after watching 2 episodes of season 2: “The animation, dialogue/subtitles, and random cutscenes/zooms are absolute garbage. It's so bad compared to Jujutsu Kaisen or Tower of God season 1. We just need to read the manga to see what happened, it's not worth waiting for the anime with this mess.”
“The latest episode was a disgrace. The animation in this episode was really disappointing. The scene between Bam and Love was supposed to be a fire scene but it looked terrible. The budget cuts, really bad.”another added.
Obviously, with such a strong audience response, this doesn't bode well for the rest of the episodes. As anime seasons often start strong before gradually getting worse due to tighter deadlines, Tower of God's second season could go downhill from here.
This is a symptom of a much larger problem for anime, where working conditions are becoming increasingly harsh. According to a survey conducted by the Nippon Anime and Film Culture Association, long hours and burnout are becoming more common, which inherently leads to poor quality.
Hopefully Tower of God season 2 will be better by the end of the season, otherwise some great potential will be wasted.
