Before going to theaters, Marvel Team was predicted to be a sudden decline for Marvel Studio. In Vietnam, the film’s opening is noticeably worse than the studio’s previous works. Prime time screenings at the National Cinema Center were only limited to half a theater.
Three superheroes couldn’t save the movie.
According to statistics from Box Office Vietnam (a unit that analyzes Vietnamese cinema revenue data), the superhero movie’s revenue in the second week had a vertical decline in revenue: down more than 75% compared to the previous week. The first week of release, it earned just over 3.1 billion VND.
“There is nothing creative about the Vietnamese market, it just reflects the atmosphere of world theaters,” film critic Phan Hoang humorously commented.
Marvel Team has the worst revenue in the history of this series.
Marvel squad is the 33rd part in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and is the sequel to the billion-dollar blockbuster Captain Marvel 2019. Although expected to become a blockbuster of the year, the film had a low opening in the history of superheroes. It only grossed $47 million in North America and $63 million globally in its opening weekend. Again, the budget for this blockbuster is estimated to be around 220 million USD.
Are the days of theatrical heroes over?
Some explanation from p Variety suppose, I think Marvel squad was unlucky due to the negative impact of the Hollywood actors’ strike, making the film promotion process unfavorable. However, that is not the main reason why film sales failed.
Right from the first days of its release, Marvel Studio’s “money shaker” faced extremely low opening results. Sales are getting worse every day, reports of the “worst record” have made it difficult for the manufacturer to avoid the risk of commercial failure. Shares of disappointment with the superhero genre once again became viral, causing many potential audiences to decide not to go to theaters anymore.
The Marvel team was criticized poorly and had unattractive effects.
“To be honest, the content of this movie is quite superficial and not as attractive as previous films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Weak visual effects, a confusing plot, and too many unnecessary characters make viewers tired. This can only be explained because the film’s content is problematic, not because the superhero genre is out of date. I think the genre of the movie is not important, the important thing is whether the movie is good or bad. If superheroes evolve and are attractive enough, audiences will certainly still welcome them. Don’t forget that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 brought in 845 million USD, Spider space travel Even worse, it’s also 690 million USD, not to mention The Batman Exposing the truth received 770 million USD and Spiderman no longer has a home brilliant with 1.9 billion USD. Those are really the saviors of cinema in the past two years,” said critic Phan Hoang.
Marvel squad is the first MCU film after the Hollywood Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) strike. Also according to Mr. Hoang, part of the film’s failure was due to the wrong timing of the promotional campaign.
Specifically, the cast can only conduct interviews on the day the movie is released. But the audience needs to expect and know about the movie sooner, before it is judged outside the box office. When opening numbers are bad, audiences almost no longer want to go to theaters to enjoy and evaluate for themselves.
In fact, Disney has “eaten enough” from the previous 32 hero versions.
As expected, Disney reduced the production of superhero movies to find a new, more suitable strategy. Earlier this week, the studio postponed several MCU installments, including Captain America: New World Order , Thunderbolts: Villain squad and Blade by 2025.
This makes part 3 of The monster Deadpool becoming the only MCU movie released in 2024.
Iman Vellani – who plays Ms. Marvel – confirmed that failed sales were Disney CEO’s worry, not hers and the cast’s.
Senior analyst Jeff Block said: “Disney realized they needed to pivot and adjust their most outstanding content. This is not a reboot but a completely new build.”
