2003 fans Fullmetal alchemist series may not be aware of a little-known OVA that reveals the fate of Edward and Alphonse Elric after one hundred years. The strange OVA serves as the series' epilogue, suggesting that Ed and Al live to see movies made about themselves.
The OVA, titled “Kids”, was released in 2005 following the release of the first Fullmetal Alchemist film, Conqueror of Shambala. “Kids” follows three children who look suspiciously like Ed, Al and Winry as they journey through a modern city. They encounter Fullmetal Alchemist-themed Gachapon machines, as well as a billboard advertising the movie Conqueror of Shamballa. They pass by Roy Mustang's soldier-like children, and finally stop in front of a police station to ask for directions from a cop who looks very much like Maes Hughes.
When the kids reach their destination, that's when things get really strange.
Edward Elric lived to be 100 years old
The children enter an apartment, where there are newspaper clippings on the wall, as well as a photo of what appears to be an adult Edward Elric shaking hands with a black man who appears to be a politician; cutaways show that Ed was in the United States at some point. The children greeted the apartment tenant as their “great-grandfather” and wished him a happy birthday from their great-grandfather Al. The text that appears on the screen, when translated, says something about the effect of “This year is 2005, Edward Elric will turn 100 years old. Somewhere in the world…”
The OVA's runtime is a little over 3 minutes, which is all that's been revealed, but if taken literally, the OVA has some wild implications. In the original 2003 anime, Edward discovers that the Alchemy of Amestris is tied to another reality, one that coincides with our own history. The implication of this OVA seems to be that the Alchemy-free world that Edward comes from is actually our world, and that 2003's Fullmetal Alchemist is somehow based on Edward's true story.
It also confirmed that Edward had children, otherwise he would not have been able to have great-grandchildren. The presence of the young girl who resembles Winry is especially puzzling, since Winry did not travel to the other world with Ed, and therefore cannot be the mother of his children. However, Ed still has the automated mailing arm that seems to be working fine – maybe Ed has found an alternate version of Winry, or perhaps the original Winry has somehow found a way to join the two. brothers into our world?
Of course, this silly little OVA was probably not intended to be canon or taken literally. However, the idea of a Fullmetal Alchemist anime being based on a true story is a crazy one, and the OVA deserves to be seen by fans of the hit series, whether they decide to pay attention to it or not. Do Fullmetal alchemistDid Edward Elric really live to be 100 years old in the real world? That's up to each fan to decide.
