An independent filmmaker has sparked fierce controversy by releasing the trailer for his live-action adaptation of “Princess Mononoke.”
The video was created by artificial intelligence (AI) to recreate the iconic world of Studio Ghibli. The video's creator expressed pride in the production process, despite criticism from netizens. Through his Twitter account, this person wrote: “I have wanted to make a live-action version of Princess Mononoke for more than 20 years. I invested 745 USD (more than 18 million VND) in Kling's credit (Kling AI is an artificial intelligence tool that allows people to used to create videos from text or turn still images into video) to give you a glimpse into the future of cinema.”
The creator of the above video said this project was a personal dream, inspired by the work of Hayao Miyazaki. Even though he knew that the legendary Japanese filmmaker was famous for his anti-AI stance, that still didn't stop him from creating the video using AI technology.
This short live-action “Princess Mononoke” video has caused strong reactions on social networks. Many users criticized the project's lack of originality, pointing out that simply copying Miyazaki's work does not represent true artistic creativity.
Someone commented: “It's terrible, it's sad because this is the future. It looks completely lifeless.”
“This video has no creativity, no respect and no concept of what art is.”another person added.
These types of reactions have highlighted the growing debate around the use of AI in content creation. Some have criticized the lack of “soul” in AI-generated content, suggesting that while the technology can facilitate certain processes, there still seems to be shortcomings in Automatic art creation.
The creator of the above video was quick to respond to criticism, saying that his intention was not to replace traditional art, but to explore ethical ways of using AI tools to “empowering artists to create new worlds”. According to this person, this adaptation is a personal project, not an attempt to redefine art: “I made this adaptation mainly for myself, because Miyazaki's work inspires me to create new worlds.”
