The Irregular at Magic High School is getting an anime sequel.
The new series is expected to launch sometime next year, and a short trailer has been rolled out to keep fans engaged in the interim. Three members of the original series’ voice cast will return to work on the sequel to The Irregular at Magic High School; Saori Hayami (Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?) will once again play the role of Miyuki Shiba alongside Yūichi Nakamura (Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-) as Tatsuya Shiba and Kiyono Yasuno (Ascendance) of a Bookworm) as Minami Sakurai.
Furthermore, 8-Bit, which replaced Madhouse as the animation studio for the second season of the original The Irregular at Magic High School anime, will produce the sequel. Jimmy Stone (That Time I Got Reborn as a Slime: Scarlet Bond) is directing the project, with Taku Iwasaki (Gurren Lagann the Movie – The Light in the Sky Are Stars) composing the music.
Tsutomu Satō’s The Irregular at Magic High School light novel series was published by Dengeki Bunko from July 2011 to September 2020, creating a total of 32 volumes. Set in a parallel reality where magic and technology coexist, the story follows a pair of brothers – Tatsuya and Miyuki – as they enroll as students at a prestigious magic high school. While the latter is praised for her amazing magical prowess, the former is criticized and shunned for appearing incompetent.
The Magic High School Abnormal books have enjoyed a high degree of success; They are often touted as some of the best-selling light novels in Japan in their first edition, and over 22 million copies have been sold globally. Their popularity led to a light novel sequel, titled The Irregular at Magic High School Magican Company, which debuted in October 2020, and apparently an anime adaptation.
Along with the Madhouse and 8-Bit chapters, two films were released in the franchise. The Irregular at Magic High School: The Movie – The Girl Who Summons the Stars, which premiered in 2016, tells a new story never before seen in light novels, and The Irregular at Magic High School: Reminiscence Arc depicts the events event of the eponymous section from the book, due out in December 2021.
Yen Press distributed Satō’s books in North America, and the first The Irregular at Magic High School anime was available on Crunchyroll.
