The first Slam Dunk to overtake Ponyo to become the 7th best anime of all time in Japan

The First Slam Dunk, the new anime film adaptation of Takehiko Inoue’s Slam Dunk basketball manga, has sold about 10.74 million tickets for 15.53 billion yen (about 106.09 million USD) as of August 27. , day 268 in Japan. The film is currently the 13th highest-grossing film of all time in Japan after surpassing Hayao Miyazaki’s 2008 animated film Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea, with a domestic cume of 15.5 billion yen. The film opened in Japan on December 3 and debuted at No. 1 in its opening weekend. The film sold 847,000 tickets and earned 1,295,808,780 yen (about $9.50 million) in its opening weekend.

GKIDS released the film in the United States and Canada with both English dub, Japanese, and English subtitles on July 28. The film earned US$662,211 in its opening weekend in North America. The film has cumulative worldwide earnings of $152,355,179 as of August 20.

The film is holding a special screening of “The Last Game” for the last seven official days in cinemas in Japan, which began last Friday and will end on Thursday.

The film won the Animation of the Year award at the 46th Annual Japan Academy Film Awards. Toshiyuki Matsui, the film’s producer, received this year’s joint award for the annual Fujimoto Awards. 42nd of the Eiga Engeki Bunka Kyōkai (Society of Theater and Cinema).

The film won the Axis Award: Satoshi Kon for Best Animated Feature for Best Feature Animated Feature and took third place for Best Animated Feature in the Film Festival Audience Award category. 27th Annual International Fantasia, held from July 20 to August 9 in Montreal, Canada.

Inoue personally directed the film at Toei Animation and wrote the script. Among the staff listed are character designer/animation director Yasuyuki Ebara (Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress) and technical director Katsuhiko Kitada (Attack on Titan episodes, Major: Yūjō no Winning Shot), Naoki Miyahara (Digimon Adventure, Popin Q), Toshio Ōhashi (LayereD Stories 0) and Yū Kamatani (Finding the magical DoReMi, Superstar Precure!). Daiki Nakazawa is directing the CG and Yūta Ogura is producing the CG. Kazuo Ogura art direction. Yota Tsuruoka is directing the sound with Koji Kasamatsu.
