The First Slam Dunk will return to Japanese theaters on August 13 this year.
Comic Natalie reports that the sports anime film, currently the 13th highest-grossing film in Japan, will rerun in more than 300 locations. Additionally, Netflix Japan will begin streaming the show on June 10.
The First Slam Dunk was released in Japan on December 3, 2022 and grossed 15.73 billion yen (~$100.26 million). The film depicts the match between Shohoku and Sannoh, with Shohoku's Point Guard Ryota Miyagi as the main character. 3DCG was used for basketball shots.
Slam Dunk mangaka Takehiko Inoue directed the film, which was co-produced by Toei Animation and CG company Dandelion Animation Studio. The film won the Best Animated Work award at the 46th Japan Academy Film Awards along with other awards.
The manga Slam Dunk was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1990 to 1996 and collected into 31 tankoubon volumes. In 2005, Takehiko drew an ending called Slam Dunk 10 Days Later on the school blackboard. The epilogue was republished in 2009.
The First Slam Dunk is the first Slam Dunk anime since the 90s, consisting of a 101-episode anime television series and four anime films. The film had its North American premiere at Anime Expo 2023 and began showing in theaters in North America on July 28, 2023. GKIDS announced last month that it will release the film on Blu-ray on June 25, 2024.
