The First Slam Dunk ended its run at the Japanese box office with a total of 15.73 billion yen (~US$107.6 million), Animate Times reports.
Total moviegoers for the 3DCG title, released on December 3, were counted at 10,882,776. X Account (formerly Twitter) of the film revealed that the film topped the daily box office chart on its last day of release.
The First Slam Dunk’s earnings make it the 13th highest-grossing film in Japan (a position it reached at the end of August), with Avatar at 12th and Ponyo at 14th. .
The First Slam Dunk is the first new Slam Dunk anime since the 1990s. It’s notable for being directed by Takehiko Inoueauthor of the manga Slam Dunk and features Shohoku Point Guard Ryota Miyagi as the main character instead of the series’ main character Hanamichi Sakuragi.

The film won several awards, including Best Animated Work at the 46th Japan Academy Film Awards. The film had its North American premiere at Anime Expo 2023 and debuted at North American box office on July 28.
The First Slam Dunk is a collaboration between Toei Animation and company CG Dandelion Animation Studio. Staff includes Yasuyuki Ebara (Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress) is a character designer and animation director, Yukiko Ban (Yowamushi Pedal: Glory Line) is the supporting character designer, Daiki Nakazawa (Pop in Q) as a CG director, Shunsuke Nakamura (Babylon co-director of photography) as director of photography, Kazuo Ogura (Attack on Titan The Final Season) is the art director and Shiori Furusho (Hero Mask) is the color designer.
Meanwhile, the cast includes Subaru Kimura as Hanamichi Sakuragi, Kenta Miyake as Takenori Akagi, Jun Kasama as Hisashi Mitsui, Shin’ichirou Kamio as Kaede Rukawa, Shugo Nakamura as Ryota Miyagi, Maaya Sakamoto as Haruko Akagi and Asami Setoanh> as Ayako.
The Slam Dunk manga series was serialized from 1990 to 1996 in Weekly Shonen Jump and collected into 31 tankoubon volumes. It previously inspired an anime series from 1993 to 1996 and four anime films. Takehiko drew the ending titled Slam Dunk 10 Days Later on the school blackboard in 2005, the ending was republished in 2009.
