Relive your fantasies of being Cure Black or Cure white with this re-released item
Did you miss your chance to shout “Double Halo Wave” while holding Card Commun in 2004? Well, now’s your chance to do just that with Precure 20th Anniversary Pretty Memories by Premium Bandai Futari wa Pretty Cure Card Commun.
It’s hard to believe that this is the 20th anniversary of the Pretty Cure series. Starting in 2004 with the iconic Futari wa Pretty Cure, as one would expect, there have been 20 unique installments. It is true that two of the series-Futari wa Pretty Cure Max Heart and Yes! Precure 5 GoGo! — is the next series, which is still an impressive achievement. And now as part of the Premium 20th Anniversary celebration Bandai will release Pretty Memories Futari wa Pretty Cure Card Community 20th Anniversary Toys.

Although some may assume that this is a re-release of Card Commun from 20 years ago, this is far from the truth. There are a number of changes made to the Anniversary edition that make it more of a collector’s item first and foremost than a children’s toy. Regardless of the quality of the original material, the original is incredibly interactive. With things like interchangeable inner and outer faces, clocks, the ability to interact with your favorite guardian fairy Mapple or Mipple, swiping specific toy cards, and the ability to link Communities yours with another community—it’s truly a toy through and through.
However, when we look at the 20th Anniversary edition of Card Commun, we see that many of those features have been removed. Specifically the watch, interaction with Apple or Mipple, and Commun’s connectivity. This shortened version makes it more of a collector’s item than something that is expected to be actively used. I should note that this is not a complaint but more of an observation since the toy still has interactive elements.
Once again, fans will be able to change the inside and outside of the Card Commun according to their Pretty Cure preferences (pink for Cure Black and blue for Cure White). Of course, one can do strange things and combine the two faces and create something completely their own.

Also returning to the 20th Anniversary toy is the card scanning feature. Included in this set are five scannable cards. Of these five cards, three come back. This is the Transformation Queen, Omp the cook for Mapple and Mipple, and Palp the nurse for Mapple and Mipple. They’re a fun throwback to the original toy, but it’s the two original cards that are the fun additions to the set. The first part features all the main characters from Futari wa Pretty Cure and Cure Black and White and the second Shiny Luminous from Futari wa Pretty Cure Max Heart.
Barcodes on cards aren’t just for show either. Where toys from 20 years ago are used to interact with Maple or Mipple, the Anniversary edition will play sounds. The sounds vary between the cards you swipe, but according to Bandai’s Premium site, the sounds include conversations between Mapple and Mipple, dialogue from Cure Black and White, and the opening theme song “DANZEN! Futari wa Pretty Cure!”
The Pretty Memories Futari wa Pretty Cure Card Commun 20th Anniversary toy is priced at an impressive 7,678 yen (about $51.09 USD). It might seem a bit pricey at first, but considering what fans get, it seems well worth it. I have a question though, will the scannable tags from 20 years ago work with this one? Chances are they won’t, but I’ve been surprised before. There are only a limited quantity available to purchase and orders end on November 23, 2023 at 11:00 p.m. JST. While currently only available in Japan, the product’s website notes that it will likely be sold outside of Japan, although there is no specific date. So, if you want to relive or relive your fantasies of being Cure Black or Cure White, now is your chance.
