Dead Dead Demon focuses on the “normal” in the abnormal
Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction by Inio Asano tells the story of third-year high school friends Koyama Kadode and Nakagawa Ouran as they navigate the usual joys and sorrows of teenage life. Despite their mundane lives, the world they live in is the exact opposite. Two years before the events of the story, an alien mothership began hovering over Tokyo. Fearing the ship would cause harm to Earth, government officials launched a pre-emptive strike.
Although the attack failed to destroy the mothership, it seemed to stop the mysterious alien activity. Since then, the ship has remained floating in the Tokyo sky, reminding the world that we are not alone and that anything can happen at any time. While most people are worried about the uncertain situation, Kadode and Ouran see it as just another hiccup in a world already rife with problems scarier than aliens.
The story is an Asano classic. Known as the “voice” of his generation, Inio Asano excels at pointing out the idiosyncrasies of individuals dealing with unusual or dysfunctional situations. Asano explores the thoughts of Kadode and Ouran as they solve problems and how they face the truth. The idea seems to be that for the younger generation, the world was foretold before the aliens arrived.
Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction, which ran from 2014 to 2022, won several awards, including the Excellence Award at the 2022 Japan Media Arts Festival, the Best Manga Award at the Shogakukan Manga Awards 2021 and Best Manga at 2018 Comic Con International Festival It was also a nominee for the Eisner Award in 2019.
