News of Rumiko Takahashi’s knighthood, shared by AnimeNewsNetwork, was authorized by the French government and she was honored in Tokyo, at the residence of the French ambassador to Japan. She was awarded the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. France has proven to be a major consumer of manga and anime, making this a high – and very welcome – honor. A recent French cultural initiative even led to a boom in manga sales.
Creators Urusei Yatsura and Ranma 1/2 earn even more trophies
Takahashi isn’t the first mangaka to receive an award, although she may be the first female manga author to do so. Other manga honorees include Akira Toriyama (Dragon Ball), Leiji Matsumoto (Captain Harlock), Go Nagai (Devilman), Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira) and Jiro Taniguchi (The Summit of the Gods). Studio Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata was also honored. Takahashi joins the ranks of the world’s greatest manga and anime writers in history as she continues to win awards for her work.
Rumiko Takahashi has created many successful manga series, many of which have been adapted into popular anime. These include Inuyasha, Urusei Yatsura, Ranma 1/2, Mao, and Rin-ne, although she also has several other works. Last year, Takahashi was inducted into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame, and she was inducted into the Eisner Hall of Fame and the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame a few years before that. She was also awarded the Order of Japan with the Purple Ribbon. Her award-winning career is unremarkable as she ranks among the biggest names in the manga scene.
Rumiko Takahashi’s works are still bringing stories to audiences, as Urusei Yatsura – her debut work – recently began airing a new anime series in the fall of 2022 on HIDIVE. Inuyasha’s sequel, Yashahime: Half-Demon Princess, is still releasing episodes in the US despite a recent anime series, and Mao has yet to finish serializing.
