Hayao Miyazaki’s latest film The Boy And The Heron has achieved another milestone climbing the ladder to become the third highest-grossing anime film at the North American box office, surpassing Pokémon the Movie 2000.
According to Box Office Mojo’s latest estimates, The Boy and the Heron grossed an impressive total of approximately $44.24 million in the United States. This achievement puts it ahead of the previous third place holder, Pokémon the Movie 2000, which grossed $43.8 million.
Present, Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train
strong> secured second place with 49.5 million USD and Pokémon: The First Movie holds the leading position with 85.7 million USD.
The Boy and Heronearned $1,817,762 in its opening weekend in the United States and came in at number 12 at the box office.
The film also achieved critical success, winning the award for Best Animated Feature at the 2024 Golden Globes and becoming the first animated film to do so. The film has also been nominated for many other awards and is also eligible for consideration for Best Picture at this year’s Oscars.
In addition, Hayao Miyazaki was also awarded Astra Award for Best International Filmmaker on January 6, 2024 for his work in the film.
The Boy And The Heron (called How Do You Live), was released in Japan on July 14, 2023. It became Studio Ghibli’s first film to receive a simultaneous IMAX release. It also became the first Japanese film and animation to open the 48th Toronto International Film Festival.
