Born in 2010, Cunning (International title: Insidious) quickly became the new phenomenon of horror movies. The work won the box office with a revenue of more than 100 million USD, many times higher than the 1.5 million USD budget.
That success led to the birth of the following parts, creating a worldwide hit horror franchise. After 5 years, the series returns with the latest part Insidious 5: The Red Door is indeterminate (Insidious: The Red Door ). This is considered one of the most anticipated horror projects this year.
The script is not attractive
The story of the film is set 10 years after the events of Insidious: Chapter 2 (two thousand and thirteen). As time passed, the Lambert family had many disturbances. Josh (Patrick Wilson) and Renai (Rose Byrne) are divorced, officially going their separate ways. Young Dalton (Ty Simpkins) grows up every day, reaching the age away from home to attend college.
Both Josh and Dalton have no recollection of the horrific events of the past. Their relationship is broken, there are many things that cannot be shared.
Patrick Wilson (right) and Ty Simpkins (left) continue to play father and son in the film.
One day, Dalton suddenly had strange dreams about a mysterious red door. At the same time, macabre events kept happening to him. It seemed that the nightmare continued to return to the Lamberts every day, but on a more terrifying level.
Fiendish 5 there is a simple story, not related to part 4 but the sequel (sequel) following part 2. Therefore, audiences who have not seen the previous parts can still grasp the content of the movie but will find it a bit confusing.
Despite the time difference, the film retains the familiar motif that made the first two parts successful. The details of the infinity, the red door or the demonic character are used quite formulaic. That more or less reduces the surprise for viewers.
Low horror factor
first 2 parts Cunning affirming James Wan’s position as the new “horror king” in Hollywood. In part 3, he did not work as a director, but switched to a producer role. Many comments that are the reason why the quality of the series is going downhill.
This time, the director’s chair of Fiendish 5 continues to be transferred to a new face, none other than the male lead Patrick Wilson. This is also the first time he tries his hand at filmmaking after more than 20 years of acting.
The method of intimidation in the movie is not attractive. The director still knows how to arrange a reasonable situation to cause fear. However, the jump-scare scenes are still familiar and uncreative, unable to conquer the fastidious audience.
The film repeats the formula of the previous part, so there are no surprises.
The crew followed the path of part 2 when exploiting family affection elements, but did not invest much in the horror part.
The story is a bit laggy in the first half hour. Towards the end, the scriptwriter became more exhausted. Instead of delving into the mysterious spiritual world, the film’s content mainly revolves around the father-son relationship between Josh – Dalton.
The unknown is one of the factors that make the brand successful Cunning also didn’t thrive in season 5. This could more or less disappoint fans of the series.
Character lacks depth
Fiendish 5 also brings back familiar characters from the franchise, especially psychic Elise (Lin Shaye). From the main role in the previous part, she went to the sideline with little acting space, so she did not leave much of an impression.
The other characters suddenly become strangers after 10 years. Their personalities and thoughts are built unconvincingly, making it difficult for viewers to empathize. Typically two main characters: Father and son Josh – Dalton.
Josh suddenly became a weak man, different from the first part. His divorce from his wife also broke the beautiful love, which was expected by many people in the previous part. Teenage Dalton is full of contradictions, still following a familiar motif in teen movies.
With a superficial script, the actors could not shine. Patrick Wilson has not really succeeded in taking on the two roles of director and acting. Ty Simpkins lacks the skill and experience to conquer viewers with the role of adult Dalton.
A series of minus points Fiendish 5 did not receive a positive response at launch. The film is rated “Rotten” with a 36% expert rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 44 out of 100 on Metacritic. This is the second lowest score for the brand, only slightly higher than part 4.
Most of the comments rated the work as unattractive, not really new, although the Lambert family story has a lot of land to exploit. The script lacks creativity leading to predictable details. The end of the film is urgent and also forced.
Can say, Fiendish 5 is a step back with the famous horror brand about the ghost world. Manufacturers should have ended up in part 2, instead of continuing to create shoddy products.
