Summary
Digimon Tamers is a meta-narrative season focused on character development and dark, mature themes. This arc introduces the Biomerge digestion, complex villains, and a stronger emotional connection between Tamers and Digimon. The finale features the climactic battle against the D-Reaper and is reminiscent of the classic cerebral anime, Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Digimon tamerThe third season of Digimon: Digital Monsters, changes the formula of previous seasons quite a bit. This season is a meta story that established Digimon as a popular television series and card game, reducing the learning curve for the heroes as digital monsters began to overtake the Digital World.
A smaller group of three Tamers allows for more character development, as well as a more animalistic depiction of Digimon. New tamer Takato breaks the confident leader archetype that his “bewildered-eyed” character design suggests, while Henry is virtuous and hates fighting, and veteran tamer Rika is a withdrawn loner reluctant to accept help.
The English dub of Tamers is the closest to the Japanese dub and has a darker, more mature tone. Digimon's signature themes of loss, grief and self-loathing are present throughout and resolution, as always, is found through teamwork, perseverance and acceptance self. But the battles are more brutal, and the kids are doing more than just cheering on their friends from the sidelines.
They discover the evolution of Biomerge, which binds the Digimon and Tamer into one powerful form, causing them to face their enemies. More than ever, the villains are complex, have meaningful character development, and their motivations are more substantial than simply being evil, or want to destroy the Digital World.
Digimon: Tamers combines the intense character research of Digimon Adventure with the innovative digestion mechanics of Adventure 02 to create The perfect season of Digimon: Digital Monsters.

It's unusual to have a DigiDestined hero who doesn't automatically embrace Digimon as sentient beings, and Tamers uses that subversion to advance Rika's character development. During a fight with Bokugumon, a wild spider Digimon, Renamon is seriously injured and begs Rika to retreat to safety, but her partner refuses.
