How does Gun Gale Online fit into the broader Sword Art Online story?
Unlike the main Sword Art Online series, Gun Gale Online is based on a light novel spin-off series, written by Keiichi Sigsawa and illustrated by Kouhaku Kuroboshi. The series takes place after the VR MMORPG Sword Art Online incident left 10,000 players trapped in an online video game, leading to a temporary decline in VR worldwide. However, the launch of AmuSphere – the successor to the controversial NerveGear – has reignited interest in VR gaming. An unusually tall college student named Karen participates in an online game called Gun Gale Online, using the game to live out her desired life in the form of a cute (and short) avatar named Llenn. Season 1 of the anime aired from April 8 to June 30, 2018, with a total of 12 episodes.
