On the other side of the door, is all of time—
“Suzume” is a coming-of-age story about the 17-year-old protagonist, Suzume, set in various disaster-stricken locations across Japan, where she must close doors that cause devastation.
Suzume’s journey begins in a quiet town in Kyushu (located in southwestern Japan) when she meets a young man who tells her, “I’m looking for a door.” What Suzume found was a weathered door standing upright amidst the rubble as if it were shielded from any disaster that occurred. Seemingly attracted by its power, Suzume reached for the handle… Doors opened one after another across Japan, causing destruction to anyone nearby. Suzume must close these gates to prevent further disaster.
—The stars, then the sunset and the morning sky.
In that realm, it seemed as if all time had melted together in the sky… Never-before-seen scenes, meetings and partings… Countless challenges were waiting for her on her journey. Despite all the obstacles that stand in her way, Suzume’s adventures provide a ray of hope for our own struggles against the harshest paths of anxiety and constraint that make up everyday life. The story of closing doors connecting our past with our present and future will leave a lasting impression in all of our hearts.
Attracted by these mysterious doors, Suzume’s journey is about to begin.
