Mokumokuren revealed on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday that The Summer Hikaru Died manga will exceed 3 million copies in circulation with the release of the sixth compilation volume on December 4. The author also announced reported that the series is currently planned to release a total of 10 volumes.
Yen Press licensed the manga to be published in English and describes the manga:
Two boys live in a village: Yoshiki and Hikaru. The two did everything together…until the day Hikaru was surrounded by a mysterious light. That's when everything changed—Hikaru was the most important thing. Deep down in his heart, Yoshiki still wants to always be by his side…but is there any Hikaru left to be with?
Mokumokuren launched the manga on Kadokawa's Young Ace Up website in August 2021. Kadokawa published the manga's fifth compilation volume on June 4. Yen Press published the fourth volume on August 20. The manga was adapted from the light novel by Mio Nukaga in December 2023.
The manga is being adapted into an anime.
The manga was nominated for the 16th Manga Taisho Award. (The official English name of the award is “Cartoon Grand Prize.”) The New York Public Library listed the manga as a Good Book for teens in 2023. The comic series also made the American Library Association's (ALA) Young Adult list. The Library Services Association's (YALSA) 2024 List of Great Graphic Novels for Young Adults.
Both the manga and author Mokumokuren were nominated for this year's Will Eisner Comic Industry Award. The manga is nominated for Best International Documentary in the United States—Asia, while Mokumokuren is nominated for Best Writer/Artist.
