Lupine the 3rd: Part III 50
Lupine III Part 3 50
ルパン三世 – Part III Ep. 50
Summary/SPOILER Summary
Acting on intelligence from Fujiko, Jigen and Lupine manage to create a top secret, brand new, fully armed Soviet nuclear submarine named Ivanov. The news spread around the world as the Soviet Union mobilized to stop the submarine. While they track it, Zenigata tries to capture Fujiko in Amsterdam. She screamed for help, pretending to be a victim of sexual assault. After escaping, she receives news from Lupine about his successful heist.
Soon after, Zenigata was handcuffed to Fujiko. However, Mossad manages to get her to safety. They are hindered by MI-6 agents. However, before they could make an offer, the Korean CIA intervened. When Zenigata is surprised by this development, the KGB arrives and takes Zenigata and Fujiko for questioning by the Soviet Minister. However, the American CIA, looking like sorority boys and sorority girls, rescues them and agrees to Fujiko's $10 million price for the submarine.
Lupin, Jigen and Goemon set up the submarine at an island before traveling to the Bermuda Triangle island to find a sunken British pirate ship from the 1700s. Fujiko goes on a cruise to meet them, accidentally pulling Zenigata on a mini submarine. Meanwhile, the Soviet Union dispatched other submarines to attack. Their torpedoes exposed the buried gold, which was dropped into a deep ditch.
They regroup at the island with Fujiko, but are attacked. Zenigata clings to the sub while Fujiko gets caught in a bidding war between the KGB and the CIA over video communication. However, the Soviet Union would not accept that and tried to sink their submarines. The Americans counterattacked. Lupine tells Goemon to cut the sub in half so they can escape. Fujiko was not satisfied with this result, but remained silent as Zenigata launched a torpedo.
Thinking/Evaluating
And with Lupine the Part 3: Part III 50this series is FINALLY over. OH. I guess the writers decided to throw everything into the pot for this episode. Assuming Lupine can steal a giant, top-secret Soviet submarine, he and Jigen can't pilot it alone. A ballistic missile submarine has a crew of 140 people. Considering the complexity, Lupine would need 8-9 people just to get going and double that number to go somewhere. And even then, they need extensive training.
That aside, you wouldn't want a giant military submarine trying to find a sunken pirate ship. Unfortunately, it took years of searching to find these. But because of the “conspiracy”, Lupine knew the exact location. The only thing the episode got right was that the ship disintegrated and everything was buried in sand/mud.
Anyway, Fujiko's plan to sell submarines to some other countries makes sense. However, the execution was rubbish. I can't help but think of the excellence of The Hunt for Red October while watching this trashy episode. If the writers hadn't turned the CIA agents into a bunch of stupid fraternity and sorority hybrids who only cared about partying, perhaps things could have been done better.
I learned that Lupine the 3rd: Journey to Danger (Lupine III: Order to assassinate Lupin) is remade this episode. I checked the old XE review and well, the remake doesn't seem to interest me much. I still own that DVD so I'll probably watch it again and torture myself.
Final thoughts and conclusion
Let me summarize my review
I guess since this is the last episode, the production team decided to have Fujiko do a scene in sexy panties and nothing else. 😑 Goemon is a waste in the episode, only used to perform the “smart Solomon” move of cutting the sub in half. Jigen doesn't have much to do other than tell Lupine about the coming trouble. As for Zenigata… well, he was used as buffalo material.
Final, Lupine the 3rd: Part III 50 is another trashy episode, filled with action, naked Fujiko (and naked CIA girls) and a story that COULD be good in which the hands of competent writers.
