Solo Leveling: Arise developer Netmarble has released a new webtoon about former Korean S-Rank Hunter and founder of the Hunter Association, Go Gunhee, who fans of the series may also recognize from the original Solo Leveling webtoon and its subsequent anime adaptation.
Over on Netmarble Forum, the official forum for Solo Leveling: Arise, Hunter Association leader Go Gunhee has received a one-shot webtoon that chronicles his past story. While the story doesn't explore his original origins, it does reveal his decision to create the Hunter Association, after lacking a system to properly assess the risks of the Gate. In a rather heartfelt story, Go Gunhee concludes, “I sought to create that change through a system that provides hunters with the help they deserve. That's why I created the Hunter Association.” Readers can check it out below; Netmarble has previously confirmed that these stories were created with the approval of Solo Leveling's original author Chugong.
Solo Leveling: Arise Introduces Chairman Go Gunhee in New Webtoon
This webtoon was released as part of the Hunter: Origin series, which Solo Leveling: Arise updates with each new Hunter addition to the game. He was introduced in the recent update on August 22, along with A-Rank Healer Han Se-Mi. Readers can watch Gunhee's introduction video above, which reveals, “In order to protect the hunters with steadfast and righteous beliefs, Go Gunhee has become the president of the Hunter Association! His bloody battle with radiant power will begin again here in Solo Leveling: ARISE.” In the game, he is voiced by Kent Williams, who also voices him in the anime series. Gunhee is listed as a Light-type Tank and is nicknamed “Heaven Beyond the Sky.”
Gunhee's webtoon follows Han Se-Mi's version and is the latest of several Hunters—most of whom are original characters. Aside from Yoo Soo-hyun, Gunhee is the only character whose Arise webtoon storyline is canon to the original story. While unlikely given his importance and the Hunter Association he oversees, anime fans could even see his storyline carried over into the next season of the series. Producer Sota Furuhashi revealed in an interview that Solo Leveling Season 2 will “focus on the side characters and fill in the story as we wrap things up.”
While the release date is still unknown, fans got their first look at Solo Leveling Season 2 at Anime Expo. The show is streaming on Crunchyroll, and the official description reads: “They say that whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, but that’s not true for the world’s weakest hunter Sung Jinwoo. After being brutally slaughtered by monsters in a high-level dungeon, Jinwoo returns to the System, a program only he can see that helps him level up in every way. Now, he’s inspired to uncover the secrets behind his powers and the dungeon that created them.”
