The series began as a web novel on Shosetsuka ni Naro from February 12, 2014 to October 30, 2020.
The light novels have also been adapted into two manga series, with the first manga series published from 2016 to 2017. Crunchyroll streamed the first season worldwide outside of Japan, and will also stream the second season. It describes the first season's synopsis as follows:
His past life and present life intersect—a boy with memories of two lives faces his destiny! After his mother was killed as a child, orphan Rio has been fighting desperately to survive in the slums. One day, he awakens memories of Haruto Amakawa, who died in an accident while dreaming of reuniting with his childhood friend, and Rio finds himself reincarnated in a world of swords and magic.
Not only that, but after helping to thwart a plot to kidnap a princess he stumbles upon, he finds himself enrolled in a prestigious school that is home to the children of the nobility. As Rio tries to rise from the bottom of a hierarchical society, he will make new rivals and have to say many goodbyes as he fights to overcome fate.
