Review of episode 1 of Ranma ½ 2024: The first episode of the highly anticipated adaptation of this classic series is here and the results are quite good. Let's see how this plays out.
Ranma ½ 2024 Overview
Ranma ½ is a Japanese manga series created by Rumiko Takahashi, lasting from August 1987 to March 1996. The series was compiled into 38 volumes by Shogakukan. Known for its unique blend of comedy, martial arts, and supernatural elements, the story revolves around Ranma Saotome, a martial artist with problems.
The manga's popularity led to Studio Deen's first anime adaptations, including two films: Ranma ½ and Ranma ½ Nettōhen, which aired from 1989 to 1992 on Fuji TV. Along with the television series, 12 original video animations (OVAs) and three feature films were released, expanding the series' multimedia presence. In 2011, the story was adapted into a live-action special that aired on Nippon Television, providing a fresh look at the classic series.
A brand new anime adaptation was announced for June 2024, with MAPPA serving as producer. This latest version premiered in October 2024 on Nippon Television and you can also stream it on Netflix. Directed by Kōnosuke Uda, the film has a script by Kimiko Ueno, character designs by Hiromi Taniguchi and music composed by Kaoru Wada. Fans of the original anime will be excited to know that most of the original voice actors will return to reprise their roles.
Ranma ½ Episode 1 Review 2024
After Urusei Yatsura and Rurouni Kenshin, here is another classic anime re-animated into a much better version with new-age technology. The old series itself was definitely amazing as it was nothing short of legendary. But with MAPPA's animation, this one lived up to the hype with good action and even better comedy. The plot itself is very humorous as we see Soun, a Dojo martial artist, waiting for the arrival of his friend's son, Ranma, who is also a martial artist. Soun plans to marry one of his three daughters to Ranma and leave the dojo to them.
We are also introduced to the three sisters where the older sister Kasumi is a gentle girl, Nabiki is the teasing middle sister, and then we have the tomboy Akane who hates men. They all got the news and some agreed with open arms, while others remained completely against this whole matchmaking process. However, all their hopes and prejudices are dashed when instead of a boy, there is a girl.
With such a 360° rotation After many events, at least Akane is happy because she won't have to marry anyone anymore. However, what she doesn't know is that Ranma is actually a boy cursed to temporarily become a woman. And only when immersed in water can he change gender. This takes the entire series in a completely new direction and chaos ensues.
I fully support the decision to revive old shows that deserve more attention. With the growth of the anime industry and the addition of new fans, these series have a chance to reach new heights and gain recognition after being re-imagined in such a modern way. The feel of the show remains similar to the old adaptation and only the animation becomes smoother and better.
Decision
I loved this episode because it was a perfect comedy that gave us a much needed break from all the Shounen and Isekai we're seeing this season. I also sense a nice love-hate relationship could blossom from here on out and I'd love to see how this whole thing plays out.
