One Piece live-action star Emily Rudd says the anime has shaped the person she’s grown into.
Rudd, who plays Nami in the upcoming adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s legendary manga, broke her love of anime in a recent episode of “Netflix Geeked”. Some of Rudd’s childhood favorites include iconic series like Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh, and Dragon Ball, among many more. “…everything in the anime made me who I am, 100%,” Rudd said. When it comes to which media has had the biggest impact on her, Rudd explains that it’s “a combination of all of those things” rather than a particular movie or TV show.
In addition to the above series. Sailor Moon ranked high on Rudd’s personal favorites list, as it was one of the few shows at the time to include a list of heroines. “I was like, ‘Oh my gosh. Women are amazing and strong and they can do anything, and it really reinforced anime in my life,” she said. Rudd is also familiar with the works of Hayao Miyazaki, one of the legendary animation directors who co-founded Studio Ghibli. “I saw Spirited Away in theaters when it came out in these states,” she explained. Spirited Away is a coming-of-age story about a young girl who is drawn into a fantasy world of Japanese spirits. The film won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2003.
Despite his hectic work schedule, Rudd still finds time to enjoy anime as an adult. “I reread One Piece, and then I watched Demon Slayer as well, because it’s out now.” Based on the manga of the same name by Koyoharu Gotouge, Demon Slayer is a Dark Fantasy story about a young man named Tanjiro Kamado who sets out on a journey to save his sister after she is turned into a demon. As of August 17, it ranks as the 7th most popular anime series on MyAnimeList.
