Warning! Contains spoilers for One Piece Chapter #1088!The Final Saga of A piece got off to a great start, but it gets even better as it repeats the series’ best and most tragic story, Ace’s execution at Marineford, only this time Luffy will have to race against time to save his grandfather Garp. Mangaka Eiichiro Oda quite enjoys going back to previous storylines and exploring them in new ways. So it makes sense that before the series ends, he would revisit what many fans consider the best.
In chapter #1088, translated by Stephen Paul, the battle between the Marines and the Blackbeard Pirates on Fullalead comes to an astonishing end when the Marines are forced to flee, leaving Garp behind. While Garp was an incredibly powerful warrior, the overwhelming numbers against him as well as the heavy wound he suffered at the hands of Shiryu took a toll. While he was able to defeat Aokiji earlier in the battle, the former Admiral and current Blackbeard Captain Titanic was able to recover and eventually pierce Garp with ice, freezing him. This means that Garp is in the hands of his enemies in an ironic fate similar to that suffered by his nephew Ace in Marineford.
One Piece is repeating Marineford with Garp instead of Ace
Ace is the son of Gol D. Roger and a member of the Whitebeard Pirates, which means that when the World Government caught him, they wanted to execute him publicly. This leads to an all-out war between many pirates who want to save Ace’s life and the forces of the World Government. Garp’s capture could lead to a similar situation. Given how important he is in the Navy, Blackbeard will likely want to publicly remove him and the World Government will likely send their best forces to bring him back. More importantly, Luffy is likely to be involved as well, as he failed to save Ace in Marineford.
An arc similar to Marineford now would be even better given how far the series has progressed. Part of what makes Marineford so great is that it features most of the factions and protagonists that One Piece has introduced all at odds with each other. This kind of conflict will be even more epic now as not only have more factions been introduced since then, but the average power level of each faction has also become stronger. Also, if this new Marineford had a similarly tragic end to Garp dying like Ace did then it could show Luffy that despite all of Gear Fifth’s newfound powers, there will always be some people he can’t save.
The new version of One Piece about Marineford will be even better than the first
Oda has somehow improved as a writer since he wrote the Marineford part, so One Piece’s latest take on it will likely be even better. Hopefully this time things will be different A piece rewatch the Marineford Arc, and Luffy will be able to save Garp, but Eiichiro Oda is anything but predictable in his stories, so fans can expect both great and tragic moments on a good level.
