Among the different A piece Announcing One Piece Day 2023, one of the most notable is that the anime will receive its first new ending theme in over a decade. While anime usually always have some sort of opening and ending theme, after adopting the 18th ending theme, Delicatessen’s “Adventure World” in 2006, One Piece became the only anime without an ending theme, choosing instead to have a longer opening theme. There’s never been an exact reason why anime did this, but for over a decade it has been one of the hallmarks of anime.
However, that tradition will change when One Piece will finally receive a new ending theme. In celebration of One Piece Day 2023, it was announced that the anime will use the band Chilli Beans’ “Raise”. doing the ending soundtrack from August 6 onwards, this is the first time One Piece has had an ending theme song in nearly 17 years. More compliments Chilli Beans. received as a band from Eiichiro Oda himself, and this is sure to bring a lot of new life to the anime, in the future.
Why did Anime One Piece stop using the ending theme?
With One Piece getting new ending themes for the first time in over a decade, it raises the question of why anime stopped using them in the first place. Like many anime series adaptations, it is always necessary to maintain a gap between the anime content and the manga content so that the anime does not catch up with the manga. One Piece solves this problem by adding episodes so that an episode usually includes a chapter of the manga, and the decision to omit the ending themes probably fits this well, as it gives the anime more time to pull the scenes out and keep things brief.
The decision for the One Piece anime to stop using ending themes may not be realistic, and that is unlikely to change any time soon. Even if the anime uses the ending theme again, the anime still needs to maintain some distance from the manga in order not to catch up and run out of content, so episodes are still likely to be restricted from adapting chapters one at a time. At the very least, though, that means the anime will pick up the pace a bit faster on its own since there won’t be as much time dedicated to the actual episode, and that can help many episodes not feel like they’re dragging on.
One Piece’s new ending theme artist is Eiichiro Oda’s personal favorite
While not much is known about One Piece’s new ending theme, one thing worth noting is that the band, Chilli Beans., is one of Eiichiro Oda’s personal favorites. In 2022, Weekly Shonen Jump announced the top 3 music recommendations of their 13 published authors, and Chilli Beans., specifically the song “lemonade”, is Oda’s #3 recommendation. If the band were recommended by Oda, then not only would they be worth listening to, but “Raise” would certainly be a song that perfectly captures the spirit of the band. A pieceso it would be the perfect song to mark the return of anime in the use of ending themes after more than a decade.
