What happened in Nier: Automata Ver1.1a Episode 22?
Produced by A-1 Pictures; Directed by Kazumoto Yokoyama
Nier: Automata Ver1.1a episode #22, “Just y[O]u and me,” opens with an explanation of how Devola and Popola were specific android models created as part of the Gestalt Project, an operation designed to save humanity from a mystical plague born from the events of Drakengard, but as shown in Nier: Replicant ver.1.22474487139…, the Gestalt Project collapsed when Nier killed the Shadowlord.
Devola and Popola-model androids like in the anime are still blamed for the end of humanityand centuries later, Devola and Popola are still fighting to atone for each other's mistakes. Back with 9S, after hacking into the Tower, 9S was confronted by a clone of himself created from old data, and the clone revealed that 2B's true identity was 2E, an Executioner model who had killed him countless times whenever he learned too much about YoRHa.
Just admitting that was a struggle for 9S, but the clone assured him that the fact that 9S was alive while 2B was dead meant that he was the first version of 9S who could live his life as freely as he wanted, but 9S was thrown back to reality before the clone could explain further. The experience with his clone left 9S physically and mentally exhausted as an army of machines converged on his location, but Devola and Popola arrived in time to help.
The two took 9S into the Tower while they dealt with the mechanical lifeforms, despite his objections, and while all the enemies were dealt with, Devola and Popola sacrificed themselves in an effort to protect 9S.. 9S's hatred for mechanical lifeforms once again surged, and with the deaths of Devola and Popola in mind, he continued his journey through the Tower.
Nier: Automata Ver1.1a Answers an important question about the game
One of the more ambiguous plot points of Nier: Automata has always been when 9S learns the truth about his relationship with 2B, as that revelation is never revealed to the player, and sometimes implied that he knew from the start. By comparison, Nier: Automata Ver1.1a episode #22 removes the ambiguity of when 9S learns the truth about 2B by having it happen when he hacks into the Tower, and while that entire sequence of events is original to the anime, it's still nice to have a more concrete answer as to when 9S learns the truth.
Nier: Automata Ver1.1a Enters Final Stage With A Beautifully Sad Note
Nier: Automata Ver1.1a episode #22 is the true beginning of the final act of the anime, and it brings that out in the most amazing way possible. The art and animation are great to look at, and Nier: Automata Ver1.1a episode #22 uses live action to narrate the events of Drakengard and Nier making the animation stand out even more thanks to the great use of mixed media. The ending of the jokes makes it seem like there won't be anything else of that magnitude, so it's nice to see that's not the case.
Returning to the Drakengard and Nier lore, episode #22 is also the perfect farewell to Devola and Popola. Although they are not the Devola and Popola from Nier, their storyline can still be considered a continuation of that story, and as such, Devola and Popola dying to protect 9S can be seen. as redemption for their role in Nier's story and a tragic but thematically fitting ending for their characters. Everything is coming to an end. Nier: Automata Version 1.1aand if lucky, it will land safely.
