Netflix Japan has revealed that the highly anticipated live-action series based on Yoshihiro Togashi’s popular manga, Yu Yu Hakusho, will premiere globally on December 14. An exclusive screening event on December 13 will feature special guests yet to be announced.
Directed by Sho Tsukikawa, best known for the live-action Let Me Eat Your Pancreas, and written by Tatsurō Mishima, the film boasts VFX expertise from Ryō Sakaguch (Lord of the Rings, X-Men). The main role of Yusuke Urameshi will be played by Takumi Kitamura (live-action Tokyo Revengers, Let Me Eat Your Pancreas).

The story of Yu Yu Hakusho revolves around 14-year-old thug Yusuke Urameshi, who sacrificed himself to save a child in a car accident, leading to an unexpected offer from the Spirit World. He is given a second chance as a “soul detective” tasked with fighting demons.
The collaboration between TOHO Studios and Netflix began in April 2021, with Netflix choosing to launch the first production at TOHO’s theatrical facility in Tokyo. This commitment breathes life into the live-action adaptation of Yu Yu Hakusho.

The manga’s popularity led to a successful anime television adaptation that ran from 1992 to 1995, resulting in two films and two original video anime (OVA) releases. Funimation brought the TV series and OVA to home video audiences in North America. The first film was distributed through Media Blasters and Central Park Media handled the second film. Toonami and Adult Swim aired the television series.

In October 2018, a new OVA debuted during a screening event and was later bundled with the fourth part of the anime’s 25th anniversary Blu-ray Collection box set. The new anime adapts the bonus chapter “Two Shot” from the manga’s seventh volume, along with the penultimate chapter, “All or Nothing.”
Additionally, the manga inspired a stage play that played in Japanese theaters in August–September 2019.
