My Hero Academy there’s a huge amount of characters it needs to juggle, but in the final round of war it really needs to introduce its scariest student more. This is a common complaint against series author Kohei Horikoshi about the variety of characters. Given the number of interesting and powerful heroes and villains they’ve created, that means some will be left out of the limelight. But that doesn’t make this complaint any less valid, especially since the manga is nearing its end.
My Hero Academia’s Ultimate War arc gave many underutilized characters a chance to shine. This of course includes many students of Class 1-A such as Mina, who was able to atone for Gigantomachia, and Shoji, who was able to calm the fury of a horde of Mutants. However, it also includes many less prominent characters such as UA’s rival high school student Shiketsu, who previously appeared in the Heroic Diploma Exam. It also includes various members of Class 1-B who fought against Class 1-A in the Joint Training Battle.
My hero academy needs to use its scariest hero Kinoko more
One of these Class 1-B students is Kinoko Komori aka Shemage. Shemage has a Mushroom Quirk that allows her to create and control spores that develop into fungi. The scary part about this Quirk is that she can also make these mushrooms grow inside the human body, in one case, Class 1-A student Tokoyami almost suffocated. Given how contagious her spores are and how dangerous they are, her Quirk could easily be used as a tool for mass murder or incapacitation. However, despite her destructive abilities, Kinoko only appeared in The Final War as a brief cameo.
This is a great shame for her incredible potential. With her Quirk, she can easily neutralize entire hordes of Super Criminals at once, freeing up other heroes to focus on larger threats who won’t be easily defeated. . On a thematic level, her Quirk makes her an interesting shield for Shigaraki, the main antagonist of the series. Both have Quirks that can be easily used to cause instant mass death but instead of attacking the world with her abilities, Kinoko is working to use her powers for good.
With My Hero Academia constantly eyeing the least used characters throughout the Final War, it is hoped that the series will return to Shemage and give her more than just a cameo. But with Horikoshi rushing to get My Hero Academia’s story to the finish line, it doesn’t look like Kinoko will get more than that, especially since the other Class 1-B heroes are getting more attention. This is a shame, however, as if My Hero Academy use her correctly, Kinoko could easily become UA’s most feared weapon against the Criminal Alliance.
