Warning: Spoiler for Chapter 388 of My Hero AcademiaMy Hero Academy currently focuses on Dabi’s ultimate act of self-destruction, but a glimpse in his mind offers a tragic vision of what the fiery villain really longs wanted.
Despite taking massive damage and being defeated by his brother, Dabi still got up and fought. He even managed to pull himself through one of Kurogiri’s portals despite being almost skin and bones, just so he could fire one last shot at Endeavor. Dabi also proves that he has had an Ice Quirk long ago, as the cooling effect of the ice powers is what keeps him from being incinerated. Now, Dabi is deliberately overloading himself, planning to go out one last time to take his father (and hundreds of others) with him – until his mother, Rei, and siblings ( other than Shoto) appears. Both Dabi and Endeavor were shocked by Rei’s sudden appearance, but Dabi’s mind retreated in the intense heat, giving him the mentality of a child.
My Hero Academia gives Dabi his family’s approval, with a hit
Dabi’s childish state misreads calls from his family begging him to stop what he’s doing, and the final page of chapter 388 reveals what he believes is going on: that family gathered together to show how proud they were of him for showing off his new Quirk, and finally becoming the person his father always wanted him to be. In the fantasy scene, Dabi loses his arm, the arm was destroyed when he tried to throw a punch in the previous chapter, suggesting that this is not some kind of memory, nor is it an ideal scenario. that things turned out the way Dabi wanted them to. It was just a misleading interpretation of what was going on at the time, filtered through Dabi’s rapidly burning brain.
This imaginary position proves that deep down, Dabi is always trying to prove himself to his father, and all he really wants is his father’s praise. Even after becoming a villain, his desires haven’t really changed; By surpassing his father, he still hopes to prove himself worthy of the Fire Quirk he inherited. It also shows that Dabi actually still has some love for his family, even if he’s gone too far at this point to act on it. There’s an emphasis here in this scene that things never have to be the way they are, that there might still be a time when Dabi can be saved… which just makes death impossible. His avoidance here becomes all the more tragic.
My Hero Academia created a heartbreaking ending for one of the most troubled families in anime and manga, but Dabi isn’t done yet and Shoto is still on the way. With a final confrontation between the two brothers about to take place, is there any chance that Shoto can get past him, even if only for a split second? Only one My Hero AcademyThe next chapter may have the answer to that.
