Popular manga series My Dress-Up Darling is getting an official TV adaptation, revealing its release date along with its first cast, statement, and costume images.
Through Comic Natalie, My Dress-Up Darling will get a live-action adaptation in Japan. The series, which shares its title with Shinichi Fukuda's popular manga, will air on MBS and TBS starting from October 8, 2024. The first images of the cast, starring Riko Nagase as Marin Kitagawa and Kota Nomura as Wakana Gojo, have also been revealed. Readers can see images of them in costume and the first statements from the cast below.
My Dress-Up Darling Live-Action Releases First Images of Marin & Gojo in Costume
Nagase talked about how impressed she was by Gojo's straightforwardness and Marin's charm, with the director wanting to emphasize the distance between the pair as they acted. “I wanted to carefully portray how two people, who at first glance seem like opposites but have some similarities, change through cosplay, and I wanted to enjoy filming this wonderful girl who looks flashy on the outside but has a sensitive heart. The hair, makeup, and cosplay costumes are also very charming, so please look forward to the broadcast!” Nomura said that the experience of acting as Gojo made him “realize once again the importance of admitting that you like the things you like.” He added, “I hope that the drama My Dress-Up Darling will be a great work for everyone, so I hope you will watch it with a warm heart!”
My Dress-Up Darling's Live-Action May Hint at Anime Season 2 Update on Horizon
The live-action My Dress-Up Darling manga will be written by Satoko Okazaki and directed by Koji Shintoku. He previously directed adaptations of the best-selling shojo manga Peach Girl and Honey Lemon Soda, the latter of which is getting an anime adaptation in 2025. This new announcement from My Dress-Up Darling is especially timely, as it's been nearly two years since the anime's sequel was announced. Manga usually take around three years to produce, with live-action adaptations being a great way to keep the hype alive and possibly hint at an anime update sooner than expected.
Square Enix publishes the My Dress-Up Darling manga and handles distribution in the United States. The official description of the series is as follows: “A lonely boy and a flashy girl find common ground through cosplay in this sweet and spicy romantic comedy! A high school boy with a passion for traditional dolls and a talent for sewing gets drawn into making cosplay costumes for one of the prettiest and most popular girls in class! As this unlikely pair grow closer, they find themselves in increasingly intriguing situations!”
