The remake shows an evolution in Sorachi's art style.
In early December 2003, Hideaki Sorachi's bold blend of science fiction, historical fiction, and comedy hit the pages of Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in Gintama. The misadventures of Gintoki Sakata take place in a reimagining of Meiji-era Japan, after aliens arrive in their “black ships” and the island nation opens up to the rest of the world. Now, just over 20 years since the series debuted, Sorachi has reimagined Gintoki's first appearance for the Gintama 20th Anniversary Exhibition.

Sorachi redrawn Gintoki's appearance in his current style, with a little more shading and a slight re-composition of the page layout and panels. He also changed some of the text, so the redrawn page was intended to be a promotional page for the exhibition. So when comparing the page that appeared in the first volume of Gintama and the new work, we can see the evolution in the creator's art style, plus the extra time that was likely spent on the new version.
The Gintama 20th Anniversary Exhibition is scheduled to open on December 14 and run until January 17 in Exhibition Hall A on the 4th floor of the Ikebukuro Sunshine City World Import Market Building. Information regarding ticket prices was not available at the time of writing. Hopefully Sorachi will redo more Gintama pages before the exhibition opens, especially since the exhibition website will be releasing original artwork for the top 20 Gintama characters in the coming months.
