After about two weeks at the Japanese box office, Mobile SuitGundam Seed Freedom has become the highest-earning Gundam film (ignoring inflation adjustment) with a total revenue of over 2.68 billion yen (~US$17.9 million). The film also had a moviegoing audience of 1.63 million.
At the box office weekend of February 9-11, the long-awaited sequel to 2002-2003’s Mobile Suit GTA Seed Destiny and 2004-2005’s Mobile Suit Gun Seed Destiny debuted back in the slot. top of the rankings after being pushed to second place by Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba-To the Hashira Training-last week. The film attracted 309,865 moviegoers and earned 554,722,150 yen (~3.7 million USD).

The previous record holder for highest-grossing Gundam film of all time (via Oricon News) was 1982’s Mobile Suit Gunma III: Encounters in Space, the third compilation film of the original Mobile Suit Sword series. The film earned 2.3 billion yen, equivalent to about 3 billion yen today.
Mobile Suit Gun Seed Freedom opened on January 26 and earned 1.06 billion yen (~US$7.09 million) in its opening weekend. 4DX, MX4D and Dolby Cinema screenings begin on February 9. The film takes place in year 75 of the Space Age, just four years after the start of Seed Destiny and two years after the start of Seed Destiny. The plot begins to unfold when the Foundation Kingdom, a nation formerly part of the Eurasian Federation, approaches Lacus Clyne’s peacekeeping organization COMPS. with a plan to attack the base of the anti-Coordinator Blue Cosmos faction.
