Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid is based on a manga series written and illustrated by Coolkyousinnjya. The manga has been running since 2013. It was serialized in Futabasha's Monthly Action magazine until 2024, but after the magazine ceased publication, it was moved to Action Manga. Four spin-off titles, Kanna's Daily Life, Elma's Office Lady Diary, Lucoa is My xx, and Fafnir the Recluse, were also serialized in Monthly Action magazine and later moved to Action Web.
Kyoto Animation animated the first season of the anime adaptation in 2017 with Yasuhiro Takemoto as director. Takemoto, who died in a studio arson attack in 2019, co-directed the second season with Tatsuya Ishihara. The second season, Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid S, aired in 2021 with 12 episodes.
The anime's main cast, Mutsumi Tamura (Kobayashi). Yuki Kuwahara (Tohru), Maria Naganawa (Kanna) recorded congratulatory messages announcing Miss Kobayashi's transition to dragon maid:
