The Heian era mages were powerful, but Gojo and the new generation surpassed them with their advanced techniques and mastery of Cursed Energy. Gojo's unparalleled power and teachings brought the modern era of mages to new heights, with promising students showing great potential. Kenjaku's intervention in the modern era, along with Yuji's development as a mage, contributed to surpassing the power of the Heian era mages.
Everywhere Jujutsu KaisenThe Heian era is hailed as the pinnacle of magic. It was from this era that the King of Curses, Sukuna, originated. Alongside him were other powerful magicians, such as his servant Uraume, his unwanted admirer Yorozu, and Takako Uro, the commander of an entire army of magicians who once fought him to the death. Domain name extensions are popular and the cursed energy flow was immense. However, with Sukuna's death and the passage of time, the curse's power gradually diminished, and so did the mages.
However, one Mage has brought the Jujutsu Order back to new heights in modern times – Satoru Gojo, the 'strongest mage in existence'. Using the Infinity Technique and possessing Six Eyes, Gojo is able to use his incredibly powerful technique to an extremely effective level, along with mastering many forms of Cursed Energy manipulation.

But it's not just Gojo – many new generations have shown great promise, both under Gojo's tutelage and those of others. The latest chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen proves it. Thanks to the main character Yuji Itadoriwho could just cement his status as the greatest wizard of all time.
Sukuna era magic is impressive
What the King of Curses faced
To determine how modern mages have surpassed the Heian period, it is important to first look at what some of the most powerful mages of that era had to offer. From what we have seen, at least one of these techniques was excellent. Uraume's Ice Formation, Yorozu's Construction, and Uro's Sky Manipulation are all excellent and versatile techniques. The latter two also possess Domain Expansions, which were arguably more common during that era. Massive reserves of Cursed Energy were another thing that Heian mages possessed, and they all used their cursed energy in quite effective ways.
However, Sukuna puts them all to shame. Sukuna possesses a depth and understanding of Jujutsu that very few possess, thanks to his undisputed reign in the Heian era. He has all the tools a sorcerer could ask for and more. In addition to his Jujutsu prowess, His four arms and eyes also give him a huge biological advantage. He had near 360-degree vision and a pair of hands for fighting. These reasons are why he was so feared in his prime, and there may never be another mage like him again.
Gojo leads the modern era
The Strongest Mages Today
In the modern era, the strongest mage is undoubtedly Satoru Gojo. Although he was not the first to use both the Limitless and Six Eyes techniques, he may be the strongest among them. His presence alone is said to have increased the activity and power of the Curse in the modern era, pushing it forward. Even Sukuna seems to respect and fear his power.spent much of the series trying to figure out how to bypass the Infinity Technique. He eventually relied on the Ten Shadows' Mahoraga to avoid Gojo's invulnerability – but even Mahoraga was no match for Gojo's power.
Not to mention the students under Gojo. Megumi Fushiguro achieved an incomplete Domain Expansion at the age of fifteen, allowing him to confront incredibly powerful mages and curses. Nobara Kugisaki escaped a black lightning bolt and defeated a Special Level Curse in her first few months of Magecraft. Kinji Hakari was able to access an infinite supply of cursed energy through his domain expansion. Yuta Okkotsu possessed one of the most diverse skill sets of any mage at only seventeen. Yuji stood out among them as an incredibly talented individual, not entirely unlike Sukuna's own biological advantages.
How the Modern Age Was Fueled by Kenjaku
Intervention can lead to higher power
However, not all of this can be attributed to the modern generation simply led by Gojo. Kenjaku had a significant hand in bringing modern magicians to new heights. Part of this was done through awakening techniques in those who had the ability to perform magic but did not have the intellect to do so. Among these magicians was Hiromi Higurama, a defense attorney who became a participant in the Culling Game. In addition to his powerful innate techniques, Higurama also learned the Reverse Curse Technique during battle.Another shocking display of jujutsu skills in modern times.
However, Kenjaku's more relevant intervention in the present day is Yuji – as Kenjaku was also Yuji's mother before he possessed Suguru Geto's body. Being a distant relative of the Curse King through his father, and having access to magic through his mother, Kenjaku always wanted Yuji to become strong. And he did, as in the month of training before the climactic Battle of Shinjuku, he mastered the skills essential to the battle against Sukuna. While Kenjaku may have been on the right path, Yuji had to follow that path, and he certainly did.

So how did the modern mages manage to stand up to the giants of the Heian Era? Well, the answer is simple – they managed to defeat Sukuna. Gojo alone came close to defeating the King of Curses, only losing because Sukuna had worked so hard to gain the power to defeat Gojo. Even then, it was a very narrow defeat, one in which Gojo earned Sukuna’s respect. At that point, the modern mages – and Kashimo, the exception – attacked Sukuna.
This battle cemented their position beyond the Heian era, as even the name Sukuna was enough to make Uro tremble in fear. While some might argue that the damage suffered in Gojo's battle paved the way for their victory, it was still a tough battle, as Sukuna regained his Heian form after Kashimo's initial attack. Despite the sheer power that Sukuna displayed, every magus in the Modern era gave it their all, from Todo's victorious return, and of course, Yuji uses his Territory Expansion in an act that seals Sukuna's fate..
With Jujutsu Kaisen Near the end, Gege Akutami essentially declared the modern age to be the great new age of magic, led by Gojo's power and reinforced by Yuji's rapid growth as a mage. With Shinjuku Showdown approaching its climactic conclusion, perhaps what this new age will bring will be shown, with all its good and bad.
